MAR. 31 — Goshen Comes Close, But Loses Two
Leafs play better, but can't keep the lead late in the game
Goshen, IN — The Leafs traveled to Concordia University Thursday hoping to collect their first wins of the season. However, they fell just short after leading 4-0 in the fifth inning of Game One, and 3-2 in the fifth inning of Game Two.

In Game One Goshen’s defense was able to hold Concordia scoreless through four innings. The Leafs were the first to get on the scoreboard when Freshman Faith Borrell was able to draw a walk to lead off the second inning. Following her was sophomore Stacie Scott, who moved Borrell around with her single to right field. With a sacrifice bunt from Freshman Brandi Dalton, Borrell was able to score the games first run.

The Leafs would start things off again in the fifth inning when Freshman Erin Layman collected a double to start the inning. An RBI single to center field by senior Megan Morris made the score 2-0, Goshen. Senior Tara Haynes and Freshman Erica Weaver were also able to score in the inning. The Leafs went in to the bottom of the fifth with a 4-0 lead.

Concordia led off the top of the fifth with a home run to center field. They would keep things going as the scored two more runs in the inning closing the gap to a 4-3 lead for Goshen. Hanging on to that lead heading in to the seventh Goshen was unable to close out the game. Concordia scored tied the game up in the seventh, and then the next batter up sent an RBI single to right field to end the game. Goshen had lost 5-4.

Game Two was very similar, with the Leafs leading 3-2 after the top of the fifth inning. Concordia had scored the first two runs in the fourth inning, but Goshen answered that with three in the fifth. Layman, Haynes and Weaver were all able to get across the plate. Layman started things off with a double, which was followed by a Morris RBI single. Haynes and Weaver each reached on a fielder's choice, then senior Alissa Kostyk moved them around to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Next senior Rachel Solmos was able to hit both of them in, collecting two RBI’s with her single shot to center field. However, Concordia was able to come back in the bottom of the fifth and score two runs of their own and add another in the sixth making the final score 5-3.

Kostyk, who was playing second base in Game Two suffered a broken finger while attempting to field a ground ball. It is unknown at this time how long she will be sidelined. She is scheduled to see a hand surgeon on April 6, at which time she will find out when she may begin playing again.

Goshen is next scheduled to resume conference play as they travel to Indianapolis, IN on Saturday to face the Marian College Knights. Game One is set to begin at 1 p.m.
