MAR. 29 — Goshen Drops Pair To League Leading IWU
After a slow start in Game One Leafs battle tough IWU team in Game Two
Goshen, IN — Head Coach Marc Green knew his team would have to bring their best game against a talented Indiana Wesleyan squad Tuesday afternoon. A slow start in Game One made things difficult for the Leafs.

The Leafs gave up three first inning runs and one more in the second. They battled back in the bottom of the second scoring two runs to make the score 2-4, Indiana Wesleyan on top. Three Goshen errors in the fourth inning led to five more runs for the Wildcats, making a comeback seem even more distant with the score now standing at 2-9. Each team would score one more run apiece making the final a 3-10 victory for Indiana Wesleyan.

"We started off slowly giving up four runs in the first two innings,” said Green. “We were able to battle back in the second inning with a great RBI single to shallow left field by senior Megan Morris. With the bases loaded senior Tara Haynes drew a walk allowing freshman Brandie Dalton to score.” The Leafs would only collect three more hits in the final five innings.

Things looked bright with a lead-off double by freshman Erica Weaver in the fifth. One pitch later senior Alissa Kostyk drove Weaver in with a shot to right field. Wesleyan put a stop to that run by forcing the next three Goshen batters to ground out.

"In Game two our effort was much better and we played well against an excellent team,” said Green. Goshen held the Wildcats to just one run through the first three innings. In the fourth inning each team was able to get one run. “A clutch hit by freshman Faith Borrell gave us our only run," said Green. Borrell was able to hit freshman Erin Layman in with a drive to center field.

With the Leafs down one run, 1-2, going in to the seventh inning, freshman pitcher Tera Brackman was able to strike the first Wesleyan batter out looking. “The next batter grounded out to second and I really felt good having two outs only being down one to such a great team,” said Green. However, Indiana Wesleyan would go on to score one more run in the seventh. Goshen could not come up with a hit in the final inning of the game.

"Indiana Wesleyan has only lost two games so far this year,” said Green. “They are a great team and we played well against them in the second game. We just need to stay positive and keep improving daily.”

Goshen will next make up the final 2 1/2 innings of their second game against Grace, which was suspended due to darkness on March 22. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
