MAR. 22 — Season Finally Gets Underway Against Lancers
Poor weather kept Leafs from opening season until Tuesday; team falls to Grace
Goshen, IN — After an unusually cold, wintry March forced the Goshen College softball team to either cancel or postpone its first two games of the season, the Leafs were finally able to get the 2005 campaign underway on Tuesday, hosting Mid-Central Conference rival Grace College at the Goshen College Softball Complex. And while the conditions cooperated just enough — temperatures hovered in the 40s while the second game was suspended due to darkness — the Leafs did officially get the season started against the Lancers, dropping a 6-0 contest before trailing by the same score in the second game when the lights went out.

“We did not play our best today, but with this being our first time on our diamond and our first game with no spring trip down south, I can see a lot we have to work on,” said Marc Green, Goshen head coach. “We will continue to practice and make improvements each day.”

Goshen (0-1, 0-1) was able to manage just a single hit in its first contest, as senior Alissa Kostyk was the only Leaf to reach base by virtue of contact. Aside from the Leafs’ offensive struggles, however, the team competed fairly well. Freshman Tera Brackman (0-1) gave up just six hits in her pitching debut, while striking out an impressive seven batters. Her teammates also kept Grace’s offense to a minimum in the field, as the team did not give up a big inning of offense to the Lancers. Aside from Grace’s three-run sixth inning, Goshen kept the Lancers to just a single run in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

“Tera pitched well in her college debut, and we did some good things overall as a team,” Green said. “Hopefully we can use those good things as motivation to get better.”

Goshen trailed in the second game by a 6-0 count in the bottom of the fifth inning. It is uncertain when that game will be completed.

Goshen will next host the University of St. Francis, as the team looks to rebound in MCC competition. The Cougars will visit Goshen on Thursday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
