15 Green Resigns As Head Coach; Will Finish 2005
Addition
to family causes program leader to re-evaluate priorities |
Goshen, IN — After serving as
the head softball coach at Goshen College for a just a single season,
Marc Green announced his resignation from the position Tuesday,
effective at the conclusion of the squad’s current season.
Green cited personal reasons for the move, as a new member to his
family has helped change Green’s priorities.
“With (three-month old son) Jackson being born in late December,
my wife or I needed to make a change in order to spend more time
with him,” Green said. “It was in the best interest
of our family that I made this decision.”
The Goshen College athletic department loses a familiar face with
Green’s departure, as the 29-year old graduated from the
institution in 2003 after a two-year playing career on the men’s
golf team. Green also served as both an assistant women’s
basketball and assistant women’s soccer coach for the Leafs
during that span, culminating with his appointment as the school’s
head softball coach in July of 2003.
Taking over a team depleted by graduation in the previous year,
Green led the Leafs to an overall record of 6-27 last season with
a Mid-Central Conference mark of 1-14. A strong recruiting class
lays promise to this year’s squad, though Green will not
get to see those players past this season. Because of inclement
weather, the team has yet to play this year.
“In talking with Marc, I know how difficult this decision
was for him as he looks at his coaching future,” said Ken
Pletcher, Goshen College athletics director. “I understand
that he spent a lot of time and gave a lot of thought to weighing
the issues
of coaching and the demands of having a young family at home. We’ve
enjoyed having Marc in the department as a student, assistant coach
and head coach. He’s been a good friend to us all and we
wish him the absolute best.”
Prior to his arrival at Goshen, Green graduated from Parkland College
(a two-year institution in Champaign, Ill.) in 1998. The following
year, Green took over Parkland’s softball program and, in
two seasons, compiled an overall record of 100-38. Green led the
Cobras to the NJCAA Region XXIV Final Four in 1999 and was twice
named the Central Collegiate Conference of Illinois’ Coach
Of The Year.
In addition to being Parkland’s head softball coach for two
seasons, Green also was the Cobras’ head women’s basketball
coach during the 1998-1999 season, and compiled a record of 15-5.
Upon landing at Goshen, Green quickly became a well-utilized talent
in the Leafs’ athletic department, serving as an assistant
coach in the women’s basketball program from 2000-2003 and
as a women’s soccer assistant coach during the 2002 season.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed being here in all the different
capacities I have held,” Green said. “The interaction
with the student-athletes will be what I miss the most.”
While Green’s run as the Leafs’ softball program
leader will end at the conclusion of this season, he said he is
more determined than ever to succeed.
“This decision has actually provided even more motivation
for me as a coach, simply because it can’t be a multiple-year
process now,” Green said. “I really would like to go
out on a high note in terms of how we compete this season. We’ve
got a good mix of freshmen and seniors on this team. It would really
be nice to go out on top. However we finish, though, I feel I’m
leaving the program in a position to be very successful in the
near future.”
Pletcher said the athletic department will begin
its search for a new softball coach immediately. Check back to
