5 — Bethel Takes Two From Goshen
Leafs
keep things close in Game One, but struggle in Game 2 |
Mishawaka, IN — After a much
needed two day rest the Leafs had hoped to get on track by getting
their first two wins of the year over conference foe Bethel College.
Before their brief two day hiatus Goshen had played four of the
five previous days.
In Game One things were quiet offensively for both teams through
the first two innings. Goshen had the first base runner of the
day when freshman Brandie Dalton drew a walk and freshman Tera
Brackman followed that with a single in the top of the third inning
to give them runners on first and second. However, the Leafs could
not capitalize despite a sacrifice bunt to move them to second
and third by sophomore Stacie Scott.
The Pilots took advantage of three Leaf errors on three straight
at bats to start the bottom of the third. Bethel was able to score
three runs that inning giving them the 0-3 lead. Goshen’s
bats remained silent until the sixth inning when they would collect
four hits for singles. Brackman started things off with her single
to right field. Scott followed that with another to left. Erica
Weaver and Erin Layman also sent the ball to left field, with Layman’s
hit knocking in Scott for their first and only run of the game.
Bethel led off the seventh with a double and would later score
off their second hit of the inning to make the final score 1-4.
In Game Two the Pilots came out on fire in the first inning scoring
seven runs. Goshen on the other hand would not collect a hit until
the fourth inning when both Weaver and Layman were able to find
the grass in left field for singles. Bethel would score three more
in the fourth inning to make the score 0-10.
Goshen will now take another much needed rest before facing Rochester
College this Saturday, April 9 at home. Game One is set to begin
at 2 p.m.
