BERNE, Ind. – The Goshen College softball program continued its rebuilding effort as Interim Athletic Director Doug Yoder announced the signing of Anne Lehman.
A soon-to-be graduate of South Adams High School (Berne, Ind.), Lehman becomes the second official signing for the 2009 Maple Leafs. Primarily a second-baseman for the Starfires, Lehman has gained a reputation for being a leader on and off the field.
“Anne is like having another coach on the field,” said South Adams Head Coach Jeff Brandtmiller. “A very intelligent and positive leader.” South Adams Athletic Director Jessie O’Dell adds, “I can tell you that you (Goshen College) will be gaining a terrific kid. She’s one of those that I will always remember for her great attitude, leadership, and drive.”
Lehman’s drive has been recognized outside the South Adams community as well, as she was recently awarded the Centennial Scholarship from the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA). One of thirteen recipients –nearly two hundreds qualified applicants were received – Lehman was chosen to display the characteristics the award was created for, which the IHSAA states, “All applicants are expected to be well-rounded, positive role models who have demonstrated excellence in academics, school and community involvement, character, sportsmanship and citizenship.”
In addition to playing softball at South Adams, Lehman was a four-year member of the basketball team and competed in one year of cross country. The senior has taken part in the concert, jazz, marching, and pep bands. Lehman has also volunteered her time in her church youth group, Bible school, and service trips to Mexico and Kentucky.
On the field, Lehman played in thirty of thirty-one games for the Starfires during her junior season. She was fourth on the team in doubles, RBIs, and runs. On the defensive side – at second and first base – Lehman was second on the
team in putouts with 114, while racking up 32 assists.
