Goshen, IN — Prior to Monday
night’s match with visiting Andrews University, the Goshen
College women’s soccer team was looking to add one small
statistic to the program’s recent history.
Following the contest, the squad had tattooed the record books
in several places.
Goshen (4-4, 1-0) scored a program-record 13 times in its 13-0
win over the Cardinals Monday night at the Goshen College Soccer
Complex, running its current win streak to three matches while
single-handedly outscoring the Leafs’ 2005 season and coming
just one goal shy of the program’s 2001 season total. Freshman
Kaylee Pichardo tied a school mark with four goals tallied in the
game, while Goshen heads into its second Mid-Central Conference
match of the year with a 1-0 league record in tact — the
first time in head coach Thavisith Mounsithiraj’s five-year
career that such has been the case.
Perhaps too early to tell for certain, but Goshen has looked to
turn some type of metaphorical corner.
“Anytime you face an overmatched opponent, it is important
to maintain the pace of the game and not allow (Andrews) to slow
you down,” Mounsithiraj
said following Monday’s onslaught. “I think sometimes
in a game like tonight’s it can be difficult to keep a fast
pace. It can be easy to become sluggish. However I thought we kept
up the intensity throughout.”
It was over nearly right as it started for the Cardinals, who took
the game’s opening kick off and pushed the ball downfield
for its only true shot on goal of the evening — an attempt
sophomore keeper Emmy Gibson quickly corralled and booted away.
From there it was a real-life highlight reel of offensive plays
from Goshen’s front, as Pichardo got things going with her
first goal in the third minute off an Alison Gotwals (freshman)
assist.
Goshen tacked on scores at the seventh, ninth, 11th and 12th minute,
claiming a 5-0 lead less than 15 minutes into the match. That advantage
ballooned to a 9-0 score by halftime, as Mounsithiraj substituted
liberally with little change in pace. Pichardo again got things
going three minutes into the second half (completing her hat trick),
and again scored at the 60th minute-mark, equaling the program’s
record for most goals scored in a single game.
“Obviously Kaylee Pichardo had a good game,” Mounsithiraj
said. “We know she is very capable of scoring goals for us
every night out. Three of her goals came off of one touch where
she just redirected the ball into the goal. For her fourth she
used her dribble to get open and slip the ball past the keeper.”
Junior Jodi Birkey joined Pichardo in the multiple goal scoring
party, tacking on two in the first half (the first off an assist
from Gotwals and the second of an assist from senior Liz Martin).
Martin finished with a pair of assists on the night, while junior
Sara Groff charted one goal and three assists, Gotwals one goal
and two assists and Birkey two assists to go with her pair of scores.
“Everyone on our roster gave us valuable minutes tonight,” Mounsithiraj
said. “I was pleased with the play of many players, including
Liz Martin and (juniors) Kelsey Hartman and Erica Hartman. (Freshman)
Britt Wyse also showed us that she can be a very effective defender.
I liked what she did with the ball tonight.”
Junior Lucy Roth, freshman Laura Schlabach, freshman Melody Musser
and sophomore Emmy Gibson joined Kelsey Hartman in adding one goal
apiece, the first collegiate goals for the entire group outside
of Roth and Hartman.
Goshen took 11 corner kicks on the evening, scoring off of three.
“That was another positive for us tonight,” Mounsithiraj
said, “Scoring
off of corner kicks is something we have focused on the last
couple weeks in practice.”
The Leafs’ 13 goals was the most in single-game school history.
The program’s most recent best came in a 9-1 win over Davenport
University on Sept. 18, 2003. Goshen scored just nine goals all
of last season and just 14 in the 2001 campaign, making Monday
night’s output even more incredible.
Goshen also pushed its winning streak to three games, a mark unequalled
in the program’s last six seasons. The team’s .500
record is also a first since very early in the 2004 campaign, where
that Leafs’ team posted a 1-1 record at one point before
finishing with a 6-11-1 tally.
“We now must look to build on this tonight for our next match,” Mounsithiraj
said. “It is a very winnable match for us if we are on the
top of our game. With so many important games coming up, we must
continue to come out strong each time.”
Mounsithiraj’s team will resume MCC play Wednesday in a big
face-off with Grace College. Match time is set for 4 p.m. in Winona
Lake, Ind.
