OCT. 7 — Wesleyan Too Much From Start In 5-0 Defeat
Leafs dig hole early on; host Wildcats speed, skill overpowers Goshen

Marion, IN — It took just 43 seconds for the Goshen College women’s soccer team to get an idea of what kind of afternoon it would be against perennial Mid-Central Conference power Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday.

It wasn’t a good premonition.

The host Wildcats needed less than a minute to put a score on the board against the visiting Leafs Saturday afternoon, eventually running away with a 5-0 win in handing Goshen (4-9, 1-4) its fifth consecutive loss, all of which have been shut outs. Indiana Wesleyan attempted 11 shots on goal Saturday compared to just one for Goshen, giving head coach Thavisith Mounsithiraj’s squad little chance to compete with one of the most talented teams in the MCC.

“We can’t allow a team like IWU to get a goal 43 seconds into the game,” Mounsithiraj said following the loss. “To allow a goal in the first minute is fatal against Coach (John) Bratcher’s team. We struggled all afternoon in defending one vs. one. As usual, IWU was just very quick and technically sound all over the field.”

Indiana Wesleyan tacked on another score at the eighth minute, while a goal 10 minutes before the intermission made it a 3-0 game heading into halftime. The Wildcats scored its final two tallies at the game’s 55th- and 59th minutes, as Goshen finally began to mediate play in the match’s final 30 minutes of action.

Sophomore Emmy Gibson had a total workout in goal, defending 11 Wesleyan shots on goal and countless other attempts that sailed either wide or high. She finished with six saves on the day. Goshen’s only true chance to score came off the team’s lone corner kick of the afternoon — junior Sara Groff headed a ball into the Wesleyan box off the send, but was denied by the Wildcats’ keeper.

“Wesleyan freshman Carly Comerouski was just incredibly fast and skillful, we were unable to stop her,” Mounsithiraj said. “It was also a challenge when we tried to double up on her as she is able to find space for other players on the field. (Senior) Hannah Eash had a solid defensive effort against this very strong attacking team, however, and (junior) Lucy Roth continued to work hard throughout the entire game. Although she wasn’t able to get a shot off, (freshman) Kaylee Pichardo also worked very hard to create chances for us to score.”

The schedule gets no easier for Goshen, as the team will return to the Goshen College Soccer Complex Wednesday night for a match with MCC rival University of St. Francis. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
