Goshen, IN — What was supposed
to be “the payback” from Saturday’s 2-0 loss
at Concordia University turned into the “the setback” for
the Goshen College women’s soccer program Wednesday night,
as the Cardinals took round two by a 3-0 score at the Goshen
College Soccer Complex. The second match with the Cardinals in
just five days was supposed to be a chance at redemption according
to head coach Thavisith Mounsithiraj. Instead, Goshen (0-2, 0-0)
was left still searching for its first goal of the season with
the disappointing loss.
“We liked our chances coming into tonight’s game against
Concordia,” Mounsithiraj
said. “We felt we knew the adjustments we had to make, but
just couldn’t seem to get things going even with several
good looks on goal. We’ll go back to training and keep looking
to improve.”
Falling behind 0-1 in the first half, the Leafs appeared to be
scratching for an equalizer. The team would get several good looks
at Concordia’s net, although the first goal of the season
continued to elude them. Senior Tara Plank may have had the best
chance to score when the official signaled a foul in the 18 yard
box giving Goshen a penalty kick. However, her shot would hit the
post and fall to the ground harmlessly. Senior Molly Kauffman also
had a great shot that also hit the crossbar, giving the Cardinals
an apparent extra defender. Goshen finished the match with three
shots on goal that ricocheted off the top post.
“We actually played Concordia a bit better tonight,” Mounsithiraj
said. “We did create several chances, but just couldn’t
finish our shots.”
Mounsithiraj noted the play of his defensive unit of junior Hannah
Eash, sophomores Sara Groff and Mary Jo Martin and freshmen Amy
Clem and Emmy Gibson.
Goshen will take a break from action until next Monday, when they
will take on Cornerstone University. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
