Goshen, IN — At the conclusion
of Monday evening’s match with Calumet College, Goshen
head coach Thavisith Mounsithiraj glanced at the scoreboard,
shrugged his shoulders and sighed.
He couldn’t believe his eyes.
After an absolutely dominating performance throughout regulation
soccer and two overtimes, Mounsithiraj’s squad did everything
possible to win besides finding the net, letting the Crimson Wave
escape the Goshen College Soccer Complex with a 0-0 tie. Goshen
(1-7-1, 0-1) outshot the Wave by a 14-2 difference and generally
kept the ball on its offensive half of the field throughout the
match, but still could not find the goal despite countless opportunities.
“We let this one get away,” Mounsithiraj said afterward. “We
dominated the match but just could not find the net. In our pregame
meeting we discussed maintaining possession and creating quality
chances. I thought we did an excellent job of possessing the ball
and creating chances, but we just failed to finish.”
Goshen’s front line of sophomore midfielders Lucy Roth and
Claire Lagerwey and senior forward Tara Plank were the primary
reasons for the Leafs’ offensive dominance, keeping the pressure
on Calumet from the opening kick. Sophomores Jodi Birkey and Erica
Hartman also got in the mix early, but none could find the back
of the Calumet goal.
Lagerwey may have had the best chances to score on the evening,
nearly putting the ball into the goal on the Leafs’ lone
corner kick of the night in the second half and blasting a 15-foot
rocket off the Crimson Wave goalkeeper’s chest midway through
the first half. The Leafs failed to convert on the ensuing loose
ball, sending a point blank look over the top of the apparatus
much to the chagrin of the student-body crowd in attendance.
“Certainly we had much more control over the pace of the
game in the first half,” Mounsithiraj said. “I thought
we did a good job of controlling the midfield. Even though we continued
to dominate in the second half we could not create as many scoring
chances. We continued to be hindered by injury and I think that
caught up to us in the second half.”
Mounsithiraj was forced to rest Plank at times (bruised calves)
along with a variety of others, at one point inserting starting
freshman goalkeeper Emmy Gibson into the forward position in hopes
of creating a possible scoring opportunity. Gibson didn’t
get a quality look at the goal, but it didn’t change the
Leafs’ dominating ball control on the evening.
“I felt we had the momentum in both overtimes but again
could not finish the ball,” Mounsithiraj said.
Calumet’s only looks at the Goshen net came after counterattacks
of the Leafs’ unrelenting pushes upfield. Junior defender
Hannah Eash was quick to thwart any serious Calumet pushes, however,
maintaining her steady play that has become a trademark throughout
the season.
“Hannah Eash anchored the defense stopping any offensive
attack and quality chances,” Mounsithiraj said. “Lucy
Roth controlled the midfield while Claire Lagerwey had many quality
chances at the goal and also distributed the ball well.”
Goshen will not have much time to rest or recuperate as an administrative
error caused a glitch in the team’s schedule. Instead of
playing Mid-Central Conference foe Taylor University Wednesday
night at 5 p.m. — as previously scheduled — the team
will host the Trojans Tuesday night, less than 24 hours after stepping
off the field in finishing its match with Calumet College. Match
time is set for 7 p.m.
