SEPT. 14 — Goshen Can't Establish A Winning Streak
Manchester's Missy King goes ballistic in 6-0 Spartan win; Clem injured

North Manchester, IN — The Goshen College women’s soccer team’s efforts to build on to its 4-0 win over Bethel College (KS) last Friday fell distantly short Wednesday afternoon at Manchester College, as the host Spartans dealt the Leafs a 6-0 defeat to put an abrupt end to their winning ways.

Goshen (1-5, 0-0) gave up five scores to the Spartans’ Missy King, the most goals an individual has scored against a Leafs team in the program’s 15-year history. King already shared a part of Goshen soccer history prior to Wednesday’s match, as she scored four goals in a 5-0 Manchester win over the Leafs on Sept. 18, 2002.

“Our first touches continue to hurt us,” said Thavisith Mounsithiraj, Goshen head coach. “We were not sharp with the ball today. Our passes were not where they needed to be and several of their goals came directly from our turnovers in the defensive third of the field.”

King got going just five minutes into the match, heading the first of Manchester’s nine corner kicks into the Leafs’ net for a 1-0 lead. King then scored again at the 15th minute-mark, the 23rd minute-mark and the 30th minute-mark, finishing off her incredible afternoon with a one-touched volley into the Leafs net at the game’s 53rd minute-mark. Manchester’s Elizabeth Davis added a moot goal with just seven minutes left in the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Emmy Gibson, playing with a severely bruised right leg after being kicked early in the game, finished with seven saves in goal. Sophomore defender Sara Groff earned praise from Mounsithiraj following the match, leading Goshen’s cause in a losing effort.

“I was pleased with the play of Sara Groff,” Mounsithiraj said. “She was aggressive in winning balls and pushing forward on offense trying to make something happen. (Sophomore) Diana Castillo also did some nice things with the ball.”

Mounsithiraj was without the services of freshman defender Amy Clem throughout the match, as Clem strained her right sartorius muscle (knee) during practice on Tuesday. She is listed as day to day by Goshen head athletic trainer Linda Kaminskis.

“Injury is hurting us badly right now,” Mounsithiraj said. “Losing Amy Clem is a blow we cannot afford right now and hopefully she will be ready for our game versus Judson next Thursday. The break is going to be helpful for our injured players.”

Goshen will take the next few days to recuperate, as the team will remain idle until Thursday, Sept. 22 when the team will travel to Judson College. Match time is slated for 4 p.m.
