Fort Wayne, IN — Just two
days after playing in one of the most exciting matches in the
history of the Goshen College women’s soccer program, the
Leafs took part in one of the most nondescript ones.
Goshen (2-11-1, 0-5) remained winless in Mid-Central Conference
action following a 5-0 loss at the University of St. Francis Saturday
afternoon, a severe letdown following a pulse-stopping, literal
last second win over Rochester College at the Goshen College Soccer
Complex Thursday night (click here for article). St. Francis scored
three minutes into the match and never looked back, outshooting
Goshen by a 23 to one count on the day and recording 18 corner
kicks while the Leafs took none.
“With a team like St. Francis, they’ll keep attacking,
which is what they did throughout the afternoon today,” said
Thavisith Mounsithiraj, Goshen head coach. “We did all that
we could have done denying a passing lane through their main striker
up
front. However, they had just too much skill and athleticism throughout
the field. The corner kicks and shots on goal stats tell you how
busy we were defensively.”
Star freshman goalkeeper Emmy Gibson finished with a career-high
18 saves, but a misplayed ball early may have helped give St. Francis
its initial lead. The Cougars first goal appeared to be a routine
pickup for the sure-handed Gibson, but the ball skipped past and
into the net with just over three minutes elapsed. St. Francis
added another pair of goals within a 27-second span in the match’s
27th minute, effectively putting the game out of reach.
“(Sophomore) Claire Lagerwey had a pretty decent game out
on the flank both on the defensive side and offensive side,” Mounsithiraj
said. “We’ll get back to training on Monday and look
to rest our injured players.”
Goshen will next travel to Indianapolis to face MCC rival Marian
College on Wednesday. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
