OCT. 26 — Mounsithiraj Rescinds Post-Game Comments

Leafs' leader discusses remarks made following loss to Bethel earlier in month

Goshen, IN — Goshen head men’s soccer coach Tavi Mounsithiraj has rescinded comments made following the Leafs’ 2-1 loss at Mid-Central Conference rival Bethel College on Oct. 5, the college announced Friday.

Mounsithiraj criticized the officiating in an article appearing on www.GoLeafs.net, the official website of Goshen College athletics, following the match.

“(The Bethel match) was a very emotional match for us, and I spoke out of that emotion following the game,” Mounsithiraj said Friday. “If my comments offended anyone on a personal level following that game, I apologize. The Bethel-Goshen rivalry is one with a deep history, and the manner in which we lost the game only added to the emotion of the evening. That is not an excuse, however. I am sorry if I hurt or angered anyone with my remarks.”

Goshen College sports information director Cory Furman said that, as a "Champion of Character" institution, Goshen College athletics is held to a higher standard in the manner it reports and disperses information regarding sporting events. (Click here for more information regarding Goshen’s Champion of Character status.)

“My position here is to effectively and accurately disseminate information to those who visit our fan-based web site,” Furman said. “Obviously, articles and recaps will be written with a pro-Goshen slant. Journalistically, I stand by our report of the Bethel-Goshen men’s soccer game. Editorially, however, I believe I could have acted more judiciously. Like Tavi, I apologize if the article in question hurt or offended any individuals in any manner.”
