SEPT. 9 Goshen
Can't Duplicate Medalist Performance
DeYoung steps
up to lead team in lone home meet of season with 81 |
Millersburg, IN — Hosting its
lone tournament of the season was not enough for the Goshen College
men’s golf team to break out as a collective unit Friday
afternoon, as the squad finished third in as many teams at Timber
Ridge Golf Course with a score of 364.
The University of St. Francis won the event with a team total 308
strokes, while Purdue University North Central narrowly edged out
the Leafs for a second-place finish with a 352 tally.
“We had a number of players improve from Tuesday’s
round at Stonehenge, but a few of our guys were disappointed in
their play
today,” said Cory Furman, Goshen head coach. “Golf
is a funny game sometimes in that your swing can come and go so
quickly.”
Junior Joel Kauffman was a prime example of that trend, seeing
both ends of the spectrum on two different occasions. Just three
days after taking medalist honors at Stonehenge by carding a tournament-low
78, Kauffman began his day Friday at Timber Ridge with an uncharacteristic
47. He regrouped on the back nine to fire a 38, but the damage
had been done. His final score of 85 was seventh best overall.
“Joel wanted to win back to back tournaments, there’s
no question,” Furman
said. “He has been playing some very good golf lately and
he still is, but he had a case of the snap hooks going on the front
today. Fortunately, he got it corrected in time to turn in a very
good back nine score. If you’re able to correct something
that quickly and that effectively, you’re in pretty good
tune with your swing.”
Sophomore Ryan DeYoung was the low shooter for Goshen Friday, carding
an 81. While an improvement from the 91 he shot on Tuesday, it
was not close to the largest margin of betterment on the Leafs
roster: Junior Tyler Roth carded a 99 at Timber Ridge, 29 strokes
better than his 128 on Tuesday.
“Tyler Roth’s score today was indicative of his game,” Furman
said. “His 128 at Stonehenge was an aberration of sorts.
It was his first time playing collegiately, and Stonehenge is a
punishing course. He just got down on himself, and at Stonehenge
you have to play with confidence. He’ll be fine as we continue
our season.”
Sophomore Tyler Springer also turned in a 99 on the day, improving
from his 104 at Stonehenge. Senior Will Leichty fired a 101 (improving
from a 109) while classmate Adam Orrick was the only player aside
from Kauffman to shoot a higher score. After carding a 104 at Stonehenge,
Orrick fired a 107 at Timber Ridge.
“Adam hit a couple of poor shots and then his luck just vanished,” Furman
said. “He was so frustrated after finishing, he went out
and played another 18 holes. He carded a legit 87. It’s a
funny game.”
St. Francis’ Adam Foster and Corey Potts tied for tournament
medalist honors, each shooting a 76. Tournament director Greg Hire
then organized a putt-off to see which player would be the recipient
of the esteemed Goshen College Invitational Medalist Trophy. Needing
to hole out on a 75-footer, Potts took three putts while Foster
took two.
“It was a great day weather-wise and the players seemed to
enjoy themselves,” Furman said. “We’ll get back
to practicing for our first large tournament of the season next
week.”
Goshen will next travel to Upland to participate in the Taylor
University Invitational at Walnut Creek Golf Course on Thursday.
Match time is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
