30 Squad Shoots Season Low Heading Into MCC's
Goshen possibly
playing best collective golf as post-season tournament nears |
Huntington, IN — In its final
tune-up for the Mid-Central Conference Championships, the Goshen
College men’s golf team participated in the Huntington University
Forester Fall Invitational Friday, scoring a season-low 357 at
LaFontaine Golf Course.
The Leafs were led by strong performances at the bottom half of
the lineup, as senior Adam Orrick and junior Tyler Roth each
carded personal best 94’s to lead Goshen’s efforts.
“Adam and Tyler both got a sniff of the kind of golf they
can play when they just relax and enjoy themselves on the course,” said
Cory Furman, Goshen head coach. “They both can go lower than
90, but 94’s are good scores for them. I think they would
be pleased to be at that mark next Monday and Tuesday.”
Orrick and Roth complemented junior Joel Kauffman’s 85 and
sophomore Ryan DeYoung’s 84, as that twosome each had opportunities
to score significantly lower. Kauffman took an unfortunate 11 on
the par four 16th hole, while DeYoung scored a six and a seven
on a pair of par threes.
“Joel and Ryan are extremely talented golfers,” Furman
said. “Joel
had one bad hole at the every end that took away what probably
would have been a 78 or 79. Ryan had some difficulties gauging
the par threes, but he’s the type of player where knowledge
of the course is a big thing to him.”
DeYoung should benefit from the team’s journey to Rock Hollow
Golf Course this Sunday, when the team will play a practice round
before participating in the mammoth 54-hole MCC Championships on
Monday and Tuesday.
“The conference elected to go to a two-day, 54-hole championship
last year, and now its all we can do to go play a round and hope
for the best,” Furman said. “Our goal all season long
was to be playing our best golf come tournament time, regardless
of what that was. For the most part, we’re right on track.”
Spring Arbor Univeristy won Friday’s eight-team Forester
Invitational, shooting an incredible team score of 296. Ancilla
College’s Dirk Likes took individual medalist honors, carding
a tournament-low 72.
Goshen will next participate in the MCC Championship at Rock Hollow
in Peru, Indiana. The squad will play a continuous 36-hole round
Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday. A shotgun start of 8:30
a.m. is slated for the first day of competition.
