SEPT. 15 — Leafs Participate In Taylor Invitational
Squad can't get collective games rolling in lift, clean and place event; take sixth
Upland, IN — Less than ideal playing conditions at Walnut Creek Golf Course led to a full lift, clean and place ruling at Thursday’s Taylor University Invitational, but the Goshen College men’s golf team couldn’t take full advantage of the winter rules event: The Leafs dropped four strokes from its first two tournament totals, finishing sixth at the six-team event with a total 368 score.

“This was a course where, with the lift, clean and place rule in effect, we could have scored fairly low,” said Cory Furman, Goshen head coach. “I think we were all surprised to see high scores across the board, however. The course obviously didn’t play as easy as it looked.”

Only 10 out of a total 36 golfers shot in the 70s or below at the event, while Huntington University’s Andrew Porterfield was the lone golfer to break 70 with a 69 — and capture the individual medalist championship. Goshen was paced by sophomore Ryan DeYoung’s 87, while top golfer (junior) Joel Kauffman struggled on the back side for an 89. Kauffman shot 40 on the Walnut Creek’s “A” side, but found the going more difficult on the tight and sometimes burned out back.

“The back nine here was very dry in spots but very tight overall,” Furman said. “Joel said he just lost his focus on a few holes, and couldn’t get it back toward the end. He’s been toying with exceptional golf enough in the past few rounds that I think he’ll be fine as we approach tournament time. He’s that kind of competitor.”

Goshen’s most improved score came from sophomore Tyler Springer, as the walk-on jumped from the fourth slot to the three-hole just prior to Thursday’s tournament. Springer went out to shoot a 44/47 en route to a career-best 91.

“Tyler played some solid golf, but he can score even better,” Furman said. “He got some fortunate bounces out there today, but then he took advantage of them. He’s just starting to scratch the surface of what he can do scoring wise.”

Senior Adam Orrick brought in Goshen’s fourth counted score, going 48/53 for a total 101 tally.

Huntington won the team championship with a 296 team total. They were followed by Indiana Wesleyan University (319), Taylor University (320), the University of St. Francis (324) and Grace College (325).

Goshen will next travel to Rock Hollow Golf Course in Peru, Ind. for a practice round at the site of the 2005 Mid-Central Conference Championships in just two weeks. Following that, the Leafs will take part in the Huntington University Invitational on Friday, Sept. 30. Match time is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at LaFontaine Golf Course.
