OCT. 4, 2012 - BUILDING EXPERIENCE
As I re-read Brian's blog just now, a flood of memories re-read came flooding back that I had almost forgotten about. Those tournaments 2 weeks ago feel like they happened a full year ago in this busy college life. That is probably the story of our team over the past few weeks. As the influences and pressures and responsibilities of college pull us each in different directions, we sometimes have to prioritize. After the John P. Speiss Memorial tournament on Friday, September 21st and Saturday, September 22nd, we turned right around and got right back out on the course for a Monday/Tuesday meet in South Bend, Indiana. This meet is called the Battle at Blackthorn, hosted by Bethel College. We were left shorthanded in this meet due to some academic responsibilities and me battling illness. We did not post a team score, but I think everyone playing thought it was a great tournament to challenge themselves and add to their college playing experience.
The next week, we dealt with some of the same issues in the St. Francis Invitational tournament in Fort Wayne, IN. The first day was played on Monday at Autumn Ridge Golf Club and Tuesday the tournament was played at its sister course, Cherry Hill Golf Club. We again failed to post a team score. This concluded our Fall season's tournaments. We will continue to practice until Indiana weather drives us inside for the winter. This fall season has been great for our young team in terms of building experience. We have played in all sorts of tournaments: far away and nearby; fair weather and foul weather; together as a team and shorthanded; and we have all had our off days and on days. It is important for us to learn how to deal with all of those issues out on the course. By the time this season is over, we will have over two months of practice under our belts—experience that has made every one of us a better golfer.
