College Recognized As Champion Of Character Institution |
In
December of 2001, Goshen College was recognized by
the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics as a “Champion of Character” institution,
one of only 118 colleges and universities in the nation
to receive the honor.
The NAIA’s “Champions of Character” mission
statement is as follows:
The NAIA "Champions of Character" initiative
will create an environment in which every NAIA student-athlete,
coach, official and spectator is committed to the true
spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility,
servant leadership, and sportsmanship.
Champions of Character institutions were selected based
on those schools’ emphasis on “emphasizing
the character-building aspects of sport to NAIA student-athletes
and to youth level participants.” In order to be
recognized with this honor, Goshen College has taken
the appropriate steps to promote and record its goals
within the five core character values the NAIA Champions
of Character embraces.
“The early model for Champions of Character was, when
you see us play you will notice that we are different,” said
Ken Pletcher, Goshen College athletics director. “And
when you notice, you’ll like what you see. We feel
the core values of the Champions of Character campaign
are closely aligned to the core values established here
at Goshen College.”
