GOSHEN, Ind. — The good news keeps pouring in for the Goshen College women’s basketball program and head coach Steve Wiktorowski. Just a week after adding Anderson standout Stormy Holder (click here for related article) to the 2008-09 roster, Wiktorowski announced Thursday the signing of Rebecca Staveteig of McHendry, Ill.
A 5’9” guard, Staveteig played three years of varsity ball at Johnsburg High School, which went 89-19 while winning three Fox Valley Conference and regional championships in her tenure. As a captain her senior year, Staveteig was named all conference, a McHenry County All-Star, and advanced to the state 3-point competition while leading Skyhawks to the state elite eight.
"We feel very fortunate to pick up Rebecca late in the year.” Said Wiktorowski. “She doesn't have gaudy stats because she comes from a very successful high school program and played with a lot of other girls who have advanced to play in college, including the D-1 level.”
With a high school 3-point percentage of over 30%, Staveteig finished her career with 86 3-pointers. During the 2007-08 campaign she averaged 6.8 points a night, while firing at an outstanding 82-percent clip from the free-throw line.
“She has very good fundamentals, can really shoot, and will be a very good fit for what we want to do,” explained Wiktorowski. “Rebecca is also a very good passer and can get the ball inside when not shooting. I think she has a lot of upside and is a bit of a sleeper whose best days offensively are still ahead because she is a gym rat who loves to work at her game.”
No stranger to the big game as part of a team, Staveteig has also excelled in individual venues. At this spring’s McHendry County All Area All-Star Basketball Extravaganza, she took center stage scoring 20 points in the game and winning the 3-point competition. As a junior, Staveteig, who has also played four years of AAU with Full Package Athletics, won most valuable player honors at the Blue Print Showcase.
“I think she has the potential to become a real nice player for us, and she is a wonderful person and very good student who will only enhance our team chemistry,” added Wiktorowski. “She is exactly the kind of person we want to get from the standpoint of potential and individual character. We really look forward to her being a big part of our program over the next four years."
In addition to her on the court success, Staveteig has been a member of the National Honor Society, student council, and been named to the Academic All-Conference teams. She is part of a local mentoring program as well as helped coach eighth grade basketball and run camps for Johnsburg’s youth.
“I chose Goshen College because when I visited I felt right at home; the people and the environment really made me feel comfortable,” explained Staveteig. “The school has a great nursing program, which got me excited and the girls and Coach Wik were great so I’m excited to continue my basketball career with them.”
