NOV. 30 — GC Women drop road game to Purdue University-Calumet

Leafs will try to rebound as they start conference play against Indiana Wesleyan University

(Box Score)HAMMOND, Ind. – Looking to build on an impressive win in a previous game, the Goshen College women’s basketball team traveled to the campus of Purdue University-Calumet for its second game in three days, on Nov. 30. Taking the court with a number of ailing players, the Leafs lost 98-66 — their worst defeat of the season.

"We are really suffering with sickness on the team and obviously struggled to play our second game in three days," said Steve Wiktorowski, the Leafs' head coach. "Usually a day off between games should be plenty of time to recover, but we couldn't match Purdue Cal's level of energy and intensity, especially on the defensive end.”

Unlike their previous game, against Taylor University-Fort Wayne, things started out relatively well for the Leafs as they were able to get on the board first and post an early lead. However, the Peregrines were able to counter the Leafs and never surrendered their advantage for the remainder of the game.

While Goshen freshman Cassie Greives turned in another solid performance, it was another freshman who stole the show during the evening; unfortunately, she played for the other team. Jenny Britton of the Peregrines went seven for eight from three-point range and ended up making 10 of 12 attempts from the field to end up with 29 points.

The Leafs worked hard all night to contain a highly potent Peregrine offense, which was shooting 53 percent from the field with a 58 percent mark from three-point range.

On offense, Goshen had four players score in double figures. Senior Katie Sowers finished with 16 points, sophomores Kimmie Hummer and Lindsay Gangloff each scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Grieves scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds,

Despite the loss, Coach Wiktorowski was still able to take some positives from the experience: "I thought Greives and Sowers battled hard inside and on the boards to give us some inside presence on offense. Gangloff did some good scoring the second half. Kendra Fights also gave us good second half minutes.

"We did improve on our free throw attempts this game and I thought we did a good job in coming up with 18 offensive boards. Hopefully we can regroup this weekend and be able to put forth a better performance Tuesday at Wesleyan before heading into final exams," Wiktorowski said.

Goshen will face the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats on Tuesday, Dec. 4 in Marion, Ind. to open its conference schedule. The game will be a challenge for the Leafs as they will play a team that is ranked 15th in the NAIA top 25 poll, and also is the defending NAIA national champion. The game will be played at IWU’s Luckey Arena and tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
