JAN. 9 —Leafs lose 85-56 at #5 Bethel College

Pilot sharpshooters too accurate for Goshen

Mishawaka, Ind. – The Goshen College women's basketball team (6-11, 0-4) lost to #5 Bethel College 85-56 Wednesday night in Mishawaka.

"Sometimes you just have to give credit to your opponent,” said Goshen head coach Steve Wiktorowski.  “I thought Bethel's first half play was as good an overall performance as I've seen this year.  We didn’t play that poorly, but they made our offense rush things turned defensive rebounds into fast break points.”

Bethel connected on 65 percent of their first-half shots, including seven three-pointers.  Two Bethel players had already reached double-figure scoring to help aggregate a 53-25 advantage at intermission.

The second half was much more competitive, and the Pilots outscored Goshen by only one point.  Unfortunately, the damage was already done.

Goshen took care of the ball better than they had in the past few games, giving up possession 17 times while forcing 18 Bethel turnovers.  The Leafs also took more shots in the game than Bethel, holding a 67-53 edge, but connected on only 35.8 percent of their field goal attempts.  Meanwhile, Bethel shot 58.5 percent, including 50 percent from long-range.

“Bethel’s overall shooting proficiency was the real story of the game," said Wiktorowski.

"I thought Lindsay Gangloff had one of her better games lately and showed the kind of self-confidence and aggressiveness she needs to have to be a good player on this level.  Krystal Duensing is starting to score like she is capable of, which we really need to help open our inside game back up.”

Wiktorowski also said Erica Emanuel played well despite feeling ill, while Kimmie and Ashley Hummer played key roles in reducing turnovers.  Kendra Fights made continued steps towards becoming a major contributor in the second half of the season.

Gangloff paced Goshen with 13 points and five rebounds and Duensing recorded 11 points and four assists.

Goshen’s next two conference games are at home, starting Saturday with a 1:00 match-up with conference rival Grace College.
