JAN. 23 — Goshen defeats Knights on the road

Leafs earn 40 free-throw attempts in victory

Indianapolis, Ind. – The Goshen College women's basketball team defeated Marian College 70-67 Wednesday night in Indianapolis.  The Leafs were led by first-year Cassie Greives, who collected 20 points and 10 rebounds en route to posting her second consecutive double-double.  Juniors Krystal Duensing and Kendra Fights added 12 and 11 points respectively, while senior Katie Sowers and sophomore Kimmie Hummer contributed 8 each.

"This was a nice road win and one of our most consistent performances this season,” said head coach Steve Wiktorowski.  “We played the entire game without any stretches of poor focus or lack of execution, which has plagued our young team often this year.”

Unlike Goshen’s previous two games, both of which were conference losses, the Leafs avoided falling behind early.  On the contrary, junior Krystal Duensing connected on a three-pointer in the first possession of the game.

The teams stayed even in the early stages of the contest, and after eight minutes of play, the score favored Marian 10-8.  The Knights, thanks in part to two three-pointers of their own, went on a 8-1 run to take a short-lived 18-9 lead.  Goshen stormed back to take a 33-32 advantage by intermission.

“We were solid in taking care of the ball and in rebounding and created a few scoring opportunities for ourselves with our defense,” said Wiktorowski.  “Our offense had good balance; we had both an inside and outside game, we got scoring from a number of different individuals, and we were able to get to the free throw line more times than our opponent, even while playing on the road.”

Goshen earned 40 free-throw attempts, compared to 13 for the Knights.

The Leafs never fell behind during the second half, and even built up a double-digit advantage, leading 48-38 with 14:03 left in the game and 51-41 at the 12:47 mark.  Marian hit a trey with 47 seconds remaining to make it 65-61, but Goshen connected on its free throws the rest of the way to seal the victory.

"I thought our inside game was very solid on both ends.  Krystal hit a couple important first-half  threes to keep the post open and Katie forced a few second-half charging fouls against Jessica Carr, which helped us contain Marian’s biggest scoring threat.”

“Most importantly, especially since we didn't shoot that well from the floor, we were earned 40 free throws on the road against a very physical team.  What an important part of our offense.  Hopefully this win will give us some confidence as we begin the second round of conference play.”

The Leafs (8-13, 2-6) will host defending national champion Indiana Wesleyan University Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
