GOSHEN, Ind. –The Goshen College women's basketball team lost to No. 4 NAIA DII nationally ranked Bethel College 102-70 Saturday in Goshen.
The Maple Leafs were slow out of the gate, falling behind 6-0 to start the game. Midway through the first half, Goshen clawed back within two points after a 3-pointer from Kimmie Hummer, but that is as close as they would get to the Pilots, who went on 31-11 run to end the half.
Twenty-three offensive rebounds led to 71 total shot attempts for the Pilots, who shot 52% for the game. The Maple Leafs shot 44% on 50 attempts and had just eight offensive rebounds.
"The clear difference in this game was rebounding and turning rebounds into points. I thought we made them work for the most part for shots in their half court offense," explained Head Coach Steve Wiktorowski.
"I thought we also had a hard time getting back when they got a defensive rebound and didn't stop their fast break the second half. (Natalie) Young is the third leading scorer in the country and I thought we did about all we could with her as she may be the most difficult player to stop of any player we've faced since I've been here. I was afraid (Kelsy) McKee would want to come back here and play well and she and (Paula) Stout definitely hurt us from the arc."
Stout led Bethel with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor. Young tallied 19 points, while McKee and Nora Didrich scored 15 and 14, respectively.
"Despite giving up so many points, I thought there were some positives," added Wiktorowski. "With Krystal Duensing out we still managed to score 70 points ourselves after really struggling offensively the last game. They really took (Cassie) Greives out of the game last time and I thought she didn't let them rush her as much today and bounced back well from suffering a concussion on Wednesday."
Greives hit an outstanding 9-of-10 fromt he floor for a team-high 22 points, while Kendra Fights added 14 for the Maple Leafs.
"This was a tough week playing the 4th and 5th ranked teams in the country, and now we have to get ready to play 2 road games this week which is never easy in this conference. But seeding for the conference tourney is still very much undecided and it is important we keep our confidence up despite the tough week we had, and hopefully we'll have everyone healthy for the stretch run," said Wiktorowski.
Goshen heads to Grace College for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday.
