FEB. 13 — Goshen Takes Out Grace 66-65 in Final Minutes

Maple Leafs move into sixth in MCC as they hold on for road win

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Goshen College women's basketball team picked up a crucial road win as they held on for a 66-65 victory over Grace College Wednesday night.

"I thought tonight was a real team victory in that a lot of people played their roles well and contributed to this important win on the road," explained Head Coach Steve Wiktorowski. With the win – coupled with a 47-71 road loss by Spring Arbor – the Maple Leafs jump into sixth place in the Mid-Central Collegiate Conference with just three games remaining.

"One of our main goals was to out rebound them as that has been a weakness of ours in the conference and is something that really killed us the last time out against Bethel," explained Wiktorowski. "I thought our guards played an important role in that rebounding edge, especially Katie Sowers and Kimmie Hummer. Our guards also kept our turnovers manageable and hit enough threes to keep them from collapsing on our posts."

Hummer and Sowers grabbed nine rebounds each from the guard position, while the Maple Leafs finished with a 40-36 overall advantage on the glass.

After a back-and-forth opening few minutes, Grace capped an 11-2 run with a long-ball from Heidi Messer to give the Lancers an 15-9 lead. The six-point cushion would be Grace's largest of the night.

Goshen ended the first half with a 16-8 run that put them up 39-31 at the half, which the Maple Leafs narrowly held on to for the win.

"We had a little trouble scoring late and let them make a run, but we didn't panic on the road and did enough to win at the end," said Wiktorowski. "They had nothing to lose and everything to gain tonight, so I was glad we were able to play with good focus while also being relaxed with a lot riding on this game."

Freshman post Cassie Greives again led Goshen with 16 points off 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Ashley Hummer tallied three 3-pointers and 14 points, while Katie Sowers and Kendra Fights each scored eight.

"Greives again gave us an inside presence tonight and all our guards did a good job finding her. Both Hummers played very well in different ways, and Kendra Fights gave us a huge first half lift with some offense off the bench."

"Sowers was very solid on both ends, Leah Lehman and Jessica Carney played their roles well off the bench, and Krystal Duensing did some positive things in her first game back from a knee injury. Lindsay Gangloff also played some very good post defense against some players who were tough match-ups for her."

"Now we have to go on the road one last time in the regular season for another important game against a well-rested and always tough Taylor team. Overall, this team has taken some clear steps forward in the last month and has become much more competitive overall, and hopefully we can continue that in our last three games and maybe still move up in the seeding for the conference tournament. That is our goal."

Goshen travels to Taylor on Saturday for its final road game of the regular season. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Upland, IN.
