GOSHEN, Ind.–The Goshen College women's basketball team lost 62-60 to Trinity International on a put-back rebound with 1.48 seconds remaining Saturday in Goshen.
The score remained close throughout the game, which featured 13 lead changes.
"It really looked like we had just returned from a long Christmas break with the way we played in the first half,” said head coach Steve Wiktorowski. “We turned the ball over, were not focused defensively and allowed Trinity International to gain a lot of confidence going into halftime up by three.”
The Leafs had 23 turnovers in the game, including 14 in the first half.
First-year Cassie Greives carried the team offensively, scoring 22 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, both of which were game highs. However, Greives fouled out with about 3:11 left in the game, causing Goshen to lose their only consistent scorer and rebounder down the stretch.
Despite playing sans Greives and despite a dismal shooting effort- the Leafs shot only 37.3 percent from the field, including 1-14 from long range in the game- Goshen put itself in position to come away with a victory in the final minute of play.
Junior Krystal Duensing tied the game 58-58 by connecting on one of two free throws with 1:10 remaining. Trinity International countered with a bucket to take a two-point lead. On the ensuing Goshen possession, Duensing attempted a three, which glanced harmlessly off the rim and into the hands of Trinity’s Monique DeLoathch. Leah Lehman, a first-year, promptly stole the ball and fed Lindsay Gangloff, a sophomore, for a quick lay-up to pull the Leafs even at 60-60 with 24 seconds left to play.
Trinity brought the ball down court and missed what appeared to be two open lay-ups. However, after their second consecutive offensive rebound, they connected on the go-ahead put-back with 1.48 seconds on the game clock. Goshen called time-out and put Katie Sowers, the team’s lone senior, on the baseline to attempt a half-court baseball pass, but time expired before the Leafs could get the shot off.
“We did a good job in solidly outrebounding them but couldn't quite come up with the big one when it counted at the end,” said Wiktorowski.
The Leafs held a 39-29 rebounding advantage in the game.
Duensing finished with 13 points and sophomore Kimmie Hummer with 9.
The Leafs are now 6-8 and will enter the heart of their conference season with a trip to Spring Arbor Wednesday night.
