Rochester, IN — The Goshen College women’s basketball program — in a joint effort with the Goshen track and field program — announced the signing of 2007 Rochester High School (Rochester, Ind.) graduate Cassie Greives on Thursday, inking its first recruit of the spring signing period in the process.
The Leafs acquire a sturdy, 5-11 post presence on the basketball court and a talented thrower on the track circuit in Greives, as Leafs’ head women’s basketball coach Steve Wiktorowski said he was thrilled to begin his 2007-2008 recruiting class with the commitment.
“Cassie had been the main focus of our spring recruiting efforts because our most pressing need was to land someone who had strength and the ability to score inside,” he said. “She was recruited by colleges in three sports and is an outstanding student and person. She has shown the ability to score and board inside, and she should immediately add to our depth in the post and to the chemistry of the team.”
A four-year varsity basketball player at Rochester, Greives averaged 16 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game as a senior, while helping the Zebras to the 2004 IHSAA Class 2A State Championship as a freshman. Greives was named to the state’s all-tournament team that season, and was voted the most promising freshman in the Class 2A tournament as well. By the time she was a sophomore, Greives upped her production to 11.2 ppg and 9.6 rpg, and as a junior averaged 13.9 ppg and 12.5 boards per contest.
Greives finished her prep roundball career as Rochester’s all-time leading rebounder and a three-time All-Three Rivers Conference First Team selection, and was featured in the IHSAA’s annual anti-tobacco campaign as a senior. Greives was also a member of the Three Rivers Conference all-academic team following her senior season.
“Cassie has improved every year on the court and I think she has the potential to improve even more in college,” Wiktorowski said. “She has shown her abilities to put up big numbers, as evidenced by her 29-point and 16-rebound performance on senior night this season (against West Central High School on Feb. 3). Her image was featured this year by the IHSAA in an anti-tobacco poster campaign aimed at high school athletes across the state. We are extremely happy to have her commit to our program.”
Equally as impressive have been Greives’ efforts in the field, as the Rochester senior is currently competing in her final prep season of track and field events — and re-setting the high school’s record books in the process. Greives is Rochester’s school-record holder in the discus event — with a personal best 122 feet, 8 and ½ inches — and is a three-time sectional champion in the event as well. A two-time conference champ in the discus, Greives also finished as TRC’s runner-up in the shot put as a junior, finishing with a personal-best toss of 37 feet, 7 and ½ inches.
Greives will bolster an already strong throwing corps at Goshen, as current sophomore Deanna Kronk holds the school records in both the discus and hammer throw (click here for complete program records).
“I’m very happy to add Cassie to our strong throwing corps,” said Rick Clark, Goshen head track and field coach. “She is a three-time regional qualifier and has established a school-best record in the discus a number of times. She has a positive personality and attitude and will definitely benefit our team and entire campus.”
Greives chose Goshen over several other college suitors, claiming that the campus atmosphere just felt right to her. She said she is undecided in her field of study as of yet.
“I felt really comfortable at Goshen, I feel at home and I felt like I fit in well with the (women’s basketball) team,” she said. “Goshen is a great academic school as well, allowing me to get the education I need. I’m looking forward to spending my next four years there.”
