DEC. 19 — Leafs Flat At Cornerstone; Fall By 37-Point Margin
Golden Eagles hit on all cylinders in win while Goshen struggles

(Box Score) Grand Rapids, MI — Looking to build on what head coach Steve Wiktorowski hoped was a “breakthrough game” for his team, the Goshen College women’s basketball team came up lame at Cornerstone University Tuesday night, falling by a 42-79 score.

Just three days after knocking off Indiana Tech in the consolation game of the Goshen College Classic (click here for related article) and playing perhaps its best basketball of the season, Goshen (4-11, 0-3) could never get on track Tuesday in Michigan, shooting a lowly 28.3 percent from the floor in the squad’s most lopsided defeat of the year.

The loss was Goshen’s fourth in as many years to the Golden Eagles.

“We didn’t start off well tonight, especially defensively, which is the key to our team,” Wiktorowski said. “We had some people come off the bench, especially (junior) Katie Sowers, (freshman) Chloe VanDenBrink, and (freshman) Kara Boester who gave us a lift to finish the half and continued their high level of play the second as well. Our starters came back the second half and played better, but we really struggled with our shooting and our defense didn't really give them much trouble until the game was clearly out of hand the second half.”

With Cornerstone coming off a 64-66 loss to Trinity Christian College on Saturday — a team Goshen had beaten earlier in the season (click here for article) — the Leafs were hoping to continue their surge from Saturday. Instead, Goshen knocked in a season-low five field goals in the first half, shooting just 25 percent from the floor and falling behind by a 38-14 score at the intermission.

VanDenBrink was the leader in baskets scored, knocking in three for seven of her team-high 14 points in the first half. Boester and Sowers each added a three-point basket, which accounted for the remainder of Goshen’s points from the field in the first half. None of Goshen’s starting lineup scored in the first half, a group that produced a zero for 10 performance from the field.

Things only got slightly better in the second half, as freshmen Kimmie and Ashley Hummer were able to get shots to fall. Cornerstone used a 24 to two advantage in scoring in the paint and a 16 to nine advantage in second-chance points to roll to the win.

VanDenBrink scored her 14 points off a five of 14 shooting performance in 31 minutes of play. Boester added nine points on a three for four shooting effort from three-point land. Sowers added seven points, while Kimmie Hummer scored five and sophomore Troyanna Scott added four.  Sowers’ four rebounds was tops on the squad.

Goshen will not have long to wait for a chance to cleanse the bad taste from its mouth, as the team will host Judson College in less than 24 hours. The Lady Eagles will visit the Roman Gingerich Center tomorrow afternoon. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
