MAY 10 — Hummer Twins To Add Backcourt Punch In 2006
Goshen acquires dynamo guard tandem in latest of stellar recruiting class

Mishawaka, IN — With two talented prospects already signed to letters of intent, Goshen head coach Steve Wiktorowski announced the signing of another highly touted pair Wednesday, adding 2006 Mishawaka Marian High School graduates Ashley and Kimmie Hummer to the Leafs’ roster for 2006-2007. The Hummers join Hesston College (Hesston, KS) graduate Katie Sowers (click here for article) and West Ottowa High School (Holland, MI) graduate Chole Van Den Brink (click here for article) as Goshen’s signees to date, comprising a deep, talented class for Wiktorowski’s program.

“We are very excited to sign these two young ladies, as we worked very hard at recruiting them,” Wiktorowski said Wednesday. “One of our recruiting goals this year was to get another athletic guard, and with the Hummer twins we get two.”

Perhaps more specifically, Wiktorowski acquires a deft scorer in 5-6 Ashley Hummer and a true point guard in 5-6 Kimmie Hummer — a guard tandem that left indelible marks during their respective careers at Mishawaka Marian High School.

Ashley moves on to the college level holding a multitude of Mishawaka Marian records, departing as the school’s all-time and single-season scoring leader, charting 1,077 career points and 439 points during her senior campaign. Averaging a team-best 18.3 points per game this year, Ashley also eclipsed Mishawaka Marian’s all-time record for career three pointers made (175) and three-balls made in a season (82 this year). A unanimous first-team all-conference selection, Ashley knocked down 53 percent of her field goal attempts and 49.4 percent of her 172 three-point tries as a senior.

“Ashley will give us a big boost with her scoring and perimeter shooting,” Wiktorowski said.

Kimmie, meanwhile, arrives to the Leafs program as perhaps the biggest external reason for Ashley’s prep scoring accolades, averaging a team-best 4.1 assists per game for Mishawaka Marian this season and finishing fourth in the program’s all-time scoring list, notching 719 career points. Kimmie averaged 10.5 points per game as a senior, knocking in just under 45 percent of her two-point field goal attempts while making 78.6 percent of her free throw attempts. A rugged rebounder, Kimmie averaged just under four boards per game, the third highest average on her team and best from the guard position.

“We think Kimmie is a sleeper who can both score and get the ball to other scorers in the right places,” Wiktorowski said. “Both of these young ladies are quick athletes who play with passion, and both are gym-rats with great personalities. We think they are two of the most well-rounded girls in the area and are great additions to our team.”

With both Ashley and Kimmie carrying 3.5 grade point averages and planning to study science once at Goshen, the duo also brings a strong academic background to the institution.

“By attending Goshen, I feel that I can further both my academic and basketball career,” Ashley Hummer said. “The team is what really pulled me in when deciding which college to attend. Every time I visited campus, it just felt right.”

Sister Kimmie agreed.

“The family-like environment in which the team brings on and off the floor was why I chose to come to Goshen,” Kimmie Hummer said. “I believe it is a good fit for me both academically and athletically. Coach Wik and the team made me feel that I truly belong at Goshen and made me feel at home right away.”

For Wiktorowski, the signing of the twins turns what was a slim backcourt in 2005-2006 — sophomore Sarah Arnold was the only true guard available after freshman Krystal Duensing tore her ACL in November — into one of the most talent-rich in the Mid-Central Conference for 2006-2007.

“While we will be awfully young, we’re excited about the possibilities of our guards and ball handlers over the next couple of years,” Wiktorowski said. “Ashley and Kimmie Hummer come from an outstanding family and are the type of Christian student-athletes that we want to represent Goshen College.”

Wiktorowski said his recruiting efforts are not yet finalized for the season. Check back to this website for the most up-to-date recruiting information and team news. To contact Wiktorowski, call him at (574) 535-7492 or click here to send him an email.
