MAR. 24 — Leafs Waste No Time Improving In Off-Season
Goshen signs LaVille star McKee just weeks after first national tournament berth
Goshen, IN — Just days after appearing in the program’s first NAIA National Tournament game and winning the Mid-Central Conference title for the first time in school history, Goshen College women’s basketball head coach Steve Wiktorowski announced that his team is getting even better.

Wiktorowski and his staff announced the signing of LaVille High School senior Kelsy McKee on Wednesday, giving the Leafs a 5-8 shooter who averaged just under 13 points per game this season while scoring 15.7 points per game in her junior year and 12.9 in her sophomore campaign. With the graduation of Lindsay Fisher, the Goshen College career three-point record holder, Wiktorowski said he believes McKee can step in immediately to contribute in 2004-2005.

“We are extremely happy to have Kelsy McKee make the first commitment of this year's recruiting class,” Wiktorowski said. “We have been recruiting her for a long time and feel that she will be an excellent fit for us both as a basketball player and a person.”

McKee comes to Goshen after notching 1,033 career points while at LaVille, knocking in just over 36 percent of her three-point attempts while shooting a reliable 74 percent from the free throw line. McKee also led her team in steals in the final two years of her prep career and dished out 88 assists as a senior.

“Not only is Kesly a very good shooter, she is one of the most fundamentally sound and complete players we saw this year,” Wiktorowski said. “She will aide us with her ballhandling skills, especially by her uncanny ability to feed the post. She is also an outstanding defender with good footwork and the ability to defend multiple positions. She has been well coached, and should be able to step right into our system and make an immediate contribution.”

McKee plans to major in physical education with a minor in business once at Goshen, and said her decision to attend the school came down to both the academic and basketball aspects.

“After visiting Goshen I knew it would be the right place for me,” McKee said. “The coaching staff and team all have great personalities that make it so easy to feel welcome. I’m really excited to be part of a group with such good team chemistry. I also am excited to get a strong education that will help me succeed in my future career.”

McKee comes to a Goshen program that, in addition to winning its conference and advancing to the national tournament for the first time, set a new school record for most wins in a season with 26.

“We’re determined to continue to improve on this season’s successes,” Wiktorowski said. “Kelsy will help us do that, but most importantly she is a tremendous person from a fine family. She will help us continue the great chemistry and relationships we have established.”
