JUNE 20 — Leafs Finish Recruiting Class With Three More Additions

Pair of transfers and join volleyball, track star Herschberger for 2008-09

GOSHEN, Ind. —Goshen College women's basketball coach Steve Wiktorowski has announced the commitments of three new players to the program.

Joining next year's recruiting class will be transfers Rachel Allen from Danville Community College in Illinois and Erica Yost from MCC rival Huntington University.  Allen will also participate on the women's track team for Coach Rick Clark.  Former Fairfield High School standout Kelsey Herschberger , currently a member of the Goshen College volleyball and track teams, has also committed to play basketball next season.

Allen is a 5'6” guard from Westport, IN, who scored over 1,000 points and set a school record in the 100-meter hurdles at South Decateur High School.  Last season at Danville she averaged 4.5 points on 40% shooting and led the team in steals.  She will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Wiktorowski commented, "Rachel can play at either the point or off the ball.  I love her defensive intensity, which makes things happen when she is on the floor.  She is very unselfish and is also a capable outside shooter.  She makes good decisions, plays really hard and is a good athlete.  She will contribute right away to both the basketball and track programs."

Yost, a 5'7” guard, was a third team all-state and Detroit Free Press All-Metro pick while scoring 1,300 points at Ladywood High School.  She averaged nearly 9 points and 2 assists per game last year for Huntington.

Wiktorowski said, "She will have to sit out next season because she is a conference transfer, but then will have 2 years remaining.  I thought she was one of the more talented point guards and offensive players in the MCC last year.  She is a great passer, can shoot the 3, and is really good off the dribble.  She will make our practices better next year, and then add another dimension to our offensive style when she becomes eligible."

Herschberger, a 5'9” forward, was a four-year letterwinner at Fairfield and their leading scorer and rebounder her senior year.

Wiktorowski noted, "Kelsey played with one of our current players, Lindsay Gangloff, in high school and really missed the sport.  She is strong and a tremendous competitor who was well coached in high school.  She is an outstanding defensive player who can guard almost any player on the floor and plays bigger than she is because of her leaping ability.  She can hit the medium range jumper and has a good feel for the game.  She will be behind having sat out a year, but she has a chance to contribute soon because of her strong fundamentals and very competitive nature."

"These are 3 great kids who will make a big contribution to our program from both an athletic and chemistry standpoint.  We really wanted all three and are very pleased to get them.  With the other three newcomers we already signed for next year we feel we've had a very good recruiting class."
