NOV. 2 — Goshen Rolls Past Andrews In Season Opener
New-look team takes care of overmatched opponent by 77-48 count at home
(Box Score) Goshen, IN — A new-look Goshen men’s basketball team produced the same-old results against Andrews University Tuesday night, as the Leafs rolled to a 77-48 win over the fourth-year program in both squads’ 2006-2007 season opener.

With seven newcomers on the roster and the program’s all-time winningest class recently graduated, fans gathered at the Roman Gingerich Center to get a first official look at sixth-year head coach Stan Daugherty’s troops. And, despite some struggles throughout the game, Goshen (1-0, 0-0) looked like a team with promise if not fully realized yet.

“We had some good moments in this game and some not so good moments,” Daugherty said. “With a team as young as this, we’re going to have some inconsistency. The key will be how quickly we come together and gel as a unit. We’ve got a ways to go, but I think we can improve dramatically from now until January and February.”

Sophomore Bryce Bow initiated the scoring for the Leafs Tuesday, knocking in a three-pointer on Goshen’s second possession to give the squad a 3-0 lead. The team would never trail. A 12-10 Goshen advantage with 14:27 remaining in the first half ballooned to a 24-12 lead with 10:40 remaining, and Daugherty’s team took a 37-20 lead into the intermission.

“We came out a little too jacked up and got into a bit of a hurry on the offensive end,” Daugherty said, despite his team converting on 15 of 29 first-half field goals (51.7 percent). “Andrews is a much improved team, and we weren’t as sharp defensively as what we would have liked.”

Goshen did hold the Cardinals to a 10 for 35 effort from the field in the first half (28.6 percent), but gave up 12 offensive rebounds in the process. An early second-half push gave the Leafs a 44-26 lead, but an 11 to five run from Andrews cut the advantage to just 12 with 10:54 remaining.

It was then that Goshen turned it on.

A 20 to nothing Leafs’ run over the game’s next four minutes iced the outcome, with junior Brice Hartman scoring eight during the stretch. Goshen would push its lead to 32 points before settling for the 29-point final score.

Hartman led all scorers in the contest, charting 23 points on 10 of 13 shooting. Freshman Errick McCollum tallied 19 points and a game-high seven rebounds, while senior David Haire scored 13. Bow was next in line, scoring eight.

“It was good to see Brice Hartman shoot the ball well and we were able to give our younger guys some quality minutes,” Daugherty said. “We thought we played a little bit better in our two scrimmages, but when you put on the real uniforms and throw a pep band in the gym, it’s a little different. We’ll watch video from this game and hopefully learn from it.”

Goshen will get a much tougher test in its next contest, as Ohio Dominican University visits the Roman Gingerich Center Tuesday night. The Panthers dealt Goshen a 70-53 loss last season on the road (click here for related article). Game time is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday.
