SEPT. 26 — Weiskittel Signs On As First Recruit For '06-'07
Goshen program gets early siginng from talented 6-7 swing player
Indianapolis, IN — With the 2005-2006 season still a month away, the Goshen College men’s basketball program announced its first recruit commitment for the 2006-2007 campaign Monday, signing of 2006 Indianapolis Chatard High School graduate Hugh Weiskittel to a letter of intent.

Goshen acquires a multi-faceted, 6-7 swing player in Weiskittel, who attracted the attention of Leafs coaches with his play during the summer months in AAU competitions. Playing for Denny Earhardt’s Spiece Indy Red team, Weiskittel averaged just under 14 points and eight rebounds per game before breaking his right wrist in late June. Watching from the sidelines for the remainder of the summer months, Weiskittel said that everything felt right to commit to Goshen early. For Goshen head coach Stan Daugherty, the early commitment starts what is a crucial recruiting class.

“We are extremely pleased to get an early commitment from Hugh,” Daugherty said. “His best basketball is definitely ahead of him. He will be a very flexible player for us who can play a swing, high post or low post position. I really liked how he handled the ball in the open court during the spring. He also was able to post up and go inside and rebound with bigger people. I think we have a player who will develop into an excellent player in the MCC. We are really glad he is coming our way.”

Weiskittel will undoubtedly be asked to step in and contribute right away, as Goshen will lose 6-5 NAIA All-American Eric Walsh, 6-0 All-Mid-Central Conference guard Jordan Buller and 5-7 sharpshooter Tyler Sheerer to graduation following this season. That trio is on the verge of graduating as Goshen’s all-time winningest class, making this year’s crop all the more important.

“Hugh has given us a start to what we hope is another outstanding class of incoming players,” said Cory Furman, Goshen head assistant coach. “We were fortunate enough that we had three guys (Walsh, Buller and Sheerer) come here wanting to start a tradition. Now, we’re looking for players that want to be a part of taking us to an even higher level. Hugh Weiskittel has that type of mentality.”

Weiskittel said it was the interest from the Goshen coaches that first perked his curiosity in the institution, and his campus visit finalized it. Weiskittel noted the style of play and tight camaraderie between current Goshen players as reasons for choosing Daugherty’s program.

“This whole thing just worked out perfectly,” Weiskittel said. “After meeting and getting to know the players and coaches, it was just a good match for me. I think I’ll be able to expand my game here, and I hope I can contribute right away. It’s a very tight knit community at Goshen, and academics are a high priority. I know I’ll have people here to help me keep my grades up, and that should help me a lot.”

Weiskittel said he is uncertain as to what field of study he will pursue once at Goshen, but he is sure he made the right decision by committing early. Daugherty said he hopes to bring in up to four more players prior to the fall of 2006.

“I wanted to decide early mostly so I could play out my senior season without having to worry about the entire college decision making process,” Weiskittel said. “Everything just fit into place with Goshen. I’m looking forward to my senior season of high school ball, but I know I’ve got a lot of basketball left following this year. I’m really excited about it.”
