3 Goshen Spreads Wealth In Andrews Beating
Leafs
post balanced attack in 84-28 drubbing of Cardinals |
Goshen, IN — Attempting to dig a ditch
with teaspoons might not be the most practical idea, but with
enough manpower the task can be completed. The Goshen College men’s
basketball team embodied that ideal Thursday night at the Roman Gingerich
Center, defeating
Andrews University 84-28 behind the most balanced of efforts:
Just one Leaf player scored in double-figures — freshman Bryce Bow
had 11 — as
Goshen picked apart Andrews by committee.
“It’s no secret that we’re at our best when we share
the ball and make good decisions on offense,” said Goshen head coach
Stan Daugherty. “Tonight we moved the ball much better than we did
on Saturday.”
Coming off the heels of an 84-73 defeat to 25th-ranked Indiana
University Southeast in the McDonald’s Maple City Hoopfest championship
(click here for article), it was clear from Thursday’s outset that
Goshen (2-1, 0-0) was eager to return to the floor. A 15 to two run to
open the game was all the momentum Daugherty’s team would need,
as it methodically built a 45-14 advantage at the intermission, the team’s
largest lead of the half.
The second period was more of the same, as the Leafs continually
built a larger cushion regardless of what personnel was on the floor.
Goshen held Andrews to just an 11 for 58 effort from the field (19 percent)
on the night, while connecting on 30 of 57 shots (52.6 percent) in its
own right.
“We started the game off with some good intensity defensively,
and were able to take care of the ball on offense and work to
get good shots. At this point in the season, we’re still trying
to figure out our rhythm offensively. Tonight was a step in the right
direction.”
Bow led the team’s scoring onslaught in a reserve role, coming in
off the bench to knock down four of seven attempts — including three
of six from three-point range — for the game-high 11 point output.
Senior Jordan Buller and junior Willie Frazier had nine points each, senior
Eric Walsh charted eight, junior David Haire and freshmen Sam Boldman
and Josh Martin had seven while senior Tyler Sheerer and sophomore Brice
Hartman had six apiece. Junior Matt Crawford and sophomore Tyler Stotler
each contributed five points.
“Tonight was an example of our guys just wanting to play again,
regardless of who it was against,” said Cory Furman, Goshen assistant
coach. “We weren’t happy with how we played against I.U. Southeast
on Saturday, and after reliving that a bit on film, our guys
seemed genuinely excited to put on the uniforms again.”
The task will be significantly harder for Goshen in its next
outing, as the team will travel to Purdue University North Central
on Wednesday for a matchup with the Panthers. Game time has been
recently changed to 8 p.m. Central time, 9 p.m. Goshen time.

be played at the Scholl Center. For directions to that
