MAY 18 — Scoring Point Guard Carroll Added To The Mix
Goshen announces third signee of season in talented Alexandria H.S. sparkplug
Alexandria, IN — Just three days after adding 2006 Warren Central High School (Indianapolis) guard Zach Wright to its roster, the Goshen College men’s basketball program announced the signing of another stellar point guard, inking 2006 Alexandria High School graduate Lance Carroll to its program Thursday. Carroll, a 5-10 left-handed backcourt player that averaged over 20 points per game in each of his last two seasons, joins both Wright (click here for related article) and 6-7 Indianapolis Chatard High School swingman Hugh Weiskittel (click here for article) as the Leafs’ three signed prospects to date.

“It is good to have Lance coming our way for next year,” said Stan Daugherty, Goshen head coach. “He is a true point guard who can score in a variety of ways. He can shoot the three when left open and can penetrate and create when he is crowded on the three-point line. His game will certainly fit in with the way we want to play here.”

Carroll gives Goshen a needed scoring ball handler, as the ultra-quick guard averaged 22.2 points per game as a senior at Alexandria. A two-time, first-team All-Central Indiana Conference and All-Madison County selection, Carroll connected on 44 percent of his field goal attempts during the 2005-2006 season and made 37.4 percent of his 198 attempts from three-point land. Those shooting clips dipped only slightly from his 20 point per game, 49 percent field goal average during his junior season, in part due to the fact that Carroll played half of this year with a broken bone in his shooting hand. He has since undergone surgery to repair the injury.

“Lance is a very tough kid on the basketball court,” Daugherty said. “He will take charges and dive for loose basketballs and do whatever it takes to help his team win. I am very excited for his potential as a college player at Goshen College.”

Carroll was voted a 2005-2006 All-State selection by Hoosier Basketball Magazine, and was named one of the state’s Top 100 Seniors by numerous publications. Alexandria’s leader in scoring, assists, steals, made free throws and free throw percentage for the last two seasons, Carroll led the Tigers’ storied program to improved win-loss records in each of his three seasons as a varsity starter. In his final prep season, Carroll played for first-year head coach Mickey Hosier, his boyhood idol and Alexandria legend.

“Lance Carroll is a tremendous basketball player,” Hosier said Thursday. “He has unlimited range on offense, a knack for the ball on defense and is one of the toughest kids I have ever been around. He will be a very, very good player for Goshen over the next four years.”

An active member of Alexandria’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter, Carroll maintained a GPA of 3.0 throughout high school and plans on pursuing a field in education once at Goshen. Carroll said that Daugherty — an Alexandria native — was a big factor in his decision to sign with the Leafs’ program.

“I’ve known Coach Daugherty all of my life and greatly respect what he has accomplished both at Goshen and throughout his coaching career,” Carroll said. “It’s a great school academically and it’s close enough to home that my family can still watch me play. I like the fact that it’s a smaller school. I like the one-on-one attention in the classroom and the school’s focus on academics. I hope to help lead the team as a point guard and continue to improve as a player throughout the next four years.”

Daugherty said that, with the graduation of senior guards Tyler Sheerer and Jordan Buller this year, signing capable ball handlers was a must. With Carroll and Wright, Goshen now has two.

“Though they are two very different players, Zach and Lance give us a real toughness that can’t be measured in stats,” Daugherty said. “Sometimes that trait is underrated.”

Daugherty said that while this year’s existing class is solid as it stands currently, he hopes to add two more players in the coming weeks.
