MAY 15 — Leafs Ink Court-Savvy Wright As Second Prep
Warren Central guard to bring leadership, toughness to program
Indianapolis, IN — The Goshen College men’s basketball program announced its second recruit signing of the season on Monday, signing 2006 Warren Central High School (Indianapolis) graduate Zach Wright to a letter of intent for both basketball and men’s golf. Wright, a 6-0 guard, brings a toughness and leadership presence to the Leafs’ program, according to Goshen head coach Stan Daugherty.

“We are very pleased to have Zach coming to play basketball,” Daugherty said Monday in a written statement. “He is a very solid point guard who can take care of the ball and deliver the ball to the right man when he is open. He is a tough, competitive player who isn’t afraid to take charges and dive on the floor for loose basketballs. That type of toughness will be welcomed every day in practice and in games.”

A three-year letter winner and two-year starter at Warren Central, Wright helped guide one of the state’s biggest high schools (approximately 4,000 students) to a 17-7 overall record in his senior season against one of the state’s toughest schedules. A two-year team captain, Wright was among the team’s leaders in assists, steals and free throw percentage, concluding his three-year varsity prep career with a 45-24 win-loss mark overall. Warren Central varsity coach Scott Heady estimated that Wright had played against at least eight N.B.A. prospects over the last three years.

“Zach has been the hardest working and most coachable player in our program over the 11 years I have coached at Warren Central,” Heady said. “He has been one of our team leaders for the past two years both on and off the court, and that has been against the best competition in Indiana, as our schedule has been ranked in the state’s top five by various publications in each of the past two years. Not only has Zach led us in assists, steals and free throw percentage, but he has been voted on by his teammates as team captain in both his junior and senior years. He has shown tremendous leadership qualities during that time, and in my 18 years of coaching high school basketball, Zach is one of the most hard working, team oriented, focused athletes I have ever coached. Goshen College is getting a great team player in Zach Wright.”

While Wright’s primary focus will be on basketball once at Goshen, he also will participate as a member of the men’s golf team, brining a talented background to that program as well. Wright helped Warren Central to a sectional championship in 2005, putting up a top-round score of 76 during that tournament.

A standout in the classroom, Wright maintained a 3.3 grade point average throughout high school, serving as a member of student council and acquiring the Warren Central High School Scholar Athlete award as a result of his academic and athletic accomplishments. Wright said that he is undecided on what field of study he will pursue once at Goshen.

“When I visited campus, I really liked the manner in which basketball is approached,” Wright said. “I wanted to play with people that played extremely hard and cared about it. The coaching staff at Goshen makes that a priority. I also met with a professor on my visit, and then I saw him attending a game that night. Seeing him come showed me that basketball is important to professors at Goshen, and that was important to me. I’m really excited about this opportunity to continue my playing career, and I hope I can bring leadership and toughness to the court.”

Wright elected to attend Goshen over Franklin College and Hanover College, along with moderate interest from other schools. He joins fellow Indianapolis-native Hugh Weiskittel (click here for article) as Goshen’s 2006-2007 signees to date.
