16 Leafs Make Easy Work Of Davenport, 85-60
Team
responds to first loss of season with business-like win over Panthers |
Grand
Rapids, MI — The
best thing about Goshen’s 78-77 overtime loss to Indiana University
Southeast on Saturday afternoon was that the squad would not
have to wait long to get back on the court for another opportunity.
Cue the Davenport University Panthers.
Playing with a bit of a chip on its collective shoulder following the first loss
of the season, Goshen (6-1, 0-0) used a business-like approach to Tuesday night’s
road game, taking a 12-0 lead just three minutes into the game and never trailing
in an 85-60 win. The closest Davenport would come came at the 6:30 mark in the
first half, when a sluggish stretch allowed the host team to pull to a 28-22
score. Following a time out, however, the Leafs turned up the intensity, closing
the half with a 19 to two run to push their lead to 47-24 at the break.
“We had a good finish to the first half, and were pretty solid for most
of the night,” said Stan Daugherty, Goshen head coach. “This was
a good game for us in the sense that we got to play a lot of people a lot of
minutes, and were able to get productive minutes from a variety of players.”
The Leafs never allowed Davenport to get closer than 18 points in the second
period, allowing Daugherty to use all 13 available players, with 10 putting in
over 15 minutes of work apiece. All but two dressed players scored, while Goshen
held the Panthers to a 20 of 62 shooting performance from the field (32.3 percent),
the second-lowest mark of the season for an opponent.
“It was a good win for us on the road after a long bus ride, and I was
pleased to see how we responded after a tough loss over the weekend,” Daugherty
said. “We had good balance as always, and we are slowly beginning to understand
how to play situational basketball.”
Junior Eric Walsh led the scoring charge for Goshen, notching 19 points to go
with 10 rebounds in just over 22 minutes of work. Sophomore Matt Crawford tallied
12 points on a four for eight shooting performance, while junior Jordan Buller
canned 11 points to go with a game-high six assists. Freshman Tyler Stotler scored
10, while senior Paul Kopanski tallied nine points to go with six boards. Senior
Troy Springer, sophomore Willie Frazier and freshman Brice Hartman all tallied
six points, with Springer and Hartman collecting six rebounds each.
Goshen will next travel to the Wabash College Little Giant Tip Off Classic
this weekend, opening play against Simpson College (IA) Friday at 9 p.m. Wabash
will
host Robert Morris (IL) to open the tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday’s game
times are set for 2 p.m. (consolation) and 4 p.m. (championship).
