Anderson, IN — Goshen College head men’s
basketball coach Stan Daugherty announced the program’s second recruit
signing of the spring Wednesday, adding Anderson High School senior Sam
Boldman to the squad beginning in 2005-2006.
Boldman, a 6-4 inside-outside swing player, averaged just over
10 points per game and five rebounds per game for Anderson as a senior,
helping one of the state’s most historic and revered programs to
a 19-3 overall record. A three-year starter for the Indians, Boldman helped
Anderson to an overall record of 37-7 during his junior and senior seasons,
garnering second team all-conference honors in the ultra-competitive North
Central Conference as a senior.
“I am really excited to have Sam coming to Goshen College and
play basketball for us next season,” Daugherty said. “I really
like his athleticism and I think that he can become an outstanding
defensive player and rebounder for us in the future. I also like his versatility
on offense. He can shoot the ball from the three-point line and
he has
the size to finish at the rim. I think his best days are ahead
of him as a player.”
In addition to his roundball success, Boldman also claimed a
stellar track and field career while at Anderson, focusing primarily
on the hurdles. His career best times stand
at :14.9 in the 110-meter hurdles and :40.5 in the 300-meter
hurdles. Boldman will participate in the Leafs’ track and field
program in the spring months, running in hurdles events while
possibly exploring
the long and high jump, according to Goshen track coach Rick
Clark.
“Sam’s main strengths on the basketball floor are his work
ethic and his ability to guard bigger people,” said Cory Furman,
Goshen assistant men’s
basketball coach. “When you start for three years at Anderson High
School, you’re playing against some of the best competition in the
state on a daily basis. He comes highly regarded by (Anderson
High School head coach) Ron Hecklinski and we feel he will continue
to get better over the years
here.”
Boldman will also help carry on the Goshen basketball program’s
outstanding academic efforts, as he maintained a GPA of 3.7 throughout
his high school career. Daugherty’s team finished the 2004-2005
season with a team GPA of 3.45, the highest average the team has recorded
in four years under Daugherty. Boldman said he plans to study education
once at Goshen.
“I really liked the campus and coaches on my visit,” Boldman
said. “It
seemed like a good fit. It’s a good academic school, it’s
a good league (Mid-Central Conference). It just seemed like the
right place for me. I've always wanted to play college basketball.
It’s been a goal of mine since I was little. I feel like I've
reached that goal, but now I have to set new ones. I want to
help this team in any way I can.”
