MAR. 29 — Goshen Adds Versatile Hartman To Program
6-7 inside-outside threat second recruit to sign with Leafs thus far
Elkhart, IN — Looking to build on the most successful season in school history, the Goshen College men’s basketball program signed Elkhart Central High School standout Brice Hartman to a letter of intent Monday, joining Huntington North senior Sam Ryan in the Leafs’ 2004-2005 recruiting class to date.

“I am thrilled to have Brice coming our way,” said Stan Daugherty, Goshen head coach. “He has made tremendous improvement over the last year and his best days are still ahead of him. Brice is a first class person who is an excellent student. He will be a great fit at Goshen College.”

Daugherty acquires a versatile scorer in the 6-7 swing, as Hartman averaged 16 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game during his senior season for the Blazers. Hartman was named to first team All-Northern Indiana Conference accolades following his senior season, and was an honorable mention all-conference selection after his junior year. He helped lead Elkhart Central to a 31-16 record in his final two years of prep play, and connected on 54 percent of his field goal attempts — including a 36 percent clip from three-point range — during the 2003-2004 campaign.

“As Brice becomes stronger and gains weight, he will have a chance to be a very good player for us,” Daugherty said. “He is very versatile and can play all over the court. He is long and will create match up problems for the other team’s defense. We think Brice will fit in very nicely to our style of play.”

Hartman was named the Most Valuable Player of his high school squad by his teammates this season, and was also the MVP at the Hammond Noll Roundball Classic on Dec. 6. He was named “Cager of the Week” by the Elkhart Truth at the start of the 2003-2004 season, and was among the area’s scoring leaders throughout the year. Hartman also was selected by the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to take part in its anti-drug campaign this year, giving the standout player a chance to do radio spots about his drug-free lifestyle along with appearances on IHSAA websites and posters.

“Brice has earned this, as he has put hours upon hours in the gym to improve his game over the past two years,” said Matt Windy, Elkhart Central assistant coach. “He’s a tremendous young man both on and off the court, and I think he is a real steal for Goshen. He will help them get to the next level and accomplish even more goals they have set.”

Hartman said that the players and coaching staff at Goshen helped to make his college choice a relatively easy one. And while he is undecided on what educational major he will pursue, his 3.3 grade point average and ranking in the 25th percentile of his class make him a sure thing in the classroom.

“Goshen was a good fit, it felt right and the coaching staff and players really made me feel welcome,” Hartman said. “It’s an up and coming program, and I felt that I could make a contribution to the team. I’m excited about playing against the competition at this level — going against older, bigger guys. I’m excited about campus life and hope to have a lot of fun along the way.”

Hartman joins a Goshen program coming off the heels of its best finish in program history, as Daugherty guided the Leafs to an overall record of 21-12 in 2003-2004, the first 20-win season in school history. Daugherty said he hopes to add more players to next year’s incoming class in the near future. Check back to this website for the most up-to-date recruiting information and team news.
