5 Bethel Comes Full Force At Goshen
Leafs
can't stay with confident Pilots' first-half run in 60-89

Mishawaka, IN — Trying to make it three
wins in a row over nearby Mid-Central Conference rival Bethel College
on Saturday, the Goshen College men’s basketball team could not
complete the hat trick, falling by a 60-89 score.
After an early exchange of baskets saw the game tied at 7-7,
Bethel put on a 20 to four run over the game’s next five minutes
to open up a 27-11 lead just 10 minutes into the contest. Goshen
(17-10, 6-7) could not get things going on either end of the
court for the remainder
of the half, and found itself down by a 52-29 score at the intermission.
“This was a tough game for us in that I thought we came out mentally
ready to play,” said Stan Daugherty, Goshen head coach. “We
had good energy and effort, but I didn’t think we were very efficient
in anything that we were doing. After Bethel went on their run
to increase their lead to about 14 points or so in the first half, I thought
we didn’t
get the ball moved well enough offensively to get the best shots.”
The Leafs only converted on 10 of 23 first half attempts from
the field (43.5 percent), while Bethel buried 19 of 34 tries (55.9 percent)
en route to the large lead. Complicating the Leafs’ troubles were
11 first-half turnovers, the most errors Goshen has committed in any half
of MCC play this season.
“When we did get some good shots, we didn’t shoot well at
all,” Daugherty said. “You cannot shoot 43 percent and have
11 turnovers in the first half and expect to be in the game in this conference.
At the same time, Bethel shot the ball very well and played with a lot
of confidence. You get that type of disparity, and this is what can happen.”
Goshen attempted to make a move in the second half, but an early
mini-run was quickly silenced by the Pilots. Daugherty’s team could
only add 10 points to its total in the first 11 minutes of the second
half, while Bethel continued to play well. The Pilots pushed their lead
to 32 points on several occasions before the final 29-point cushion was
decided. Goshen actually became more anemic in shooting the ball in the
second half of play, making just 10 of 32 shots (31.3 percent) in the
final 20 minutes of action.
“I anticipated that we would come back in the second half and
shoot the ball a bit better, but instead we shot the ball worse
than in the first half,” Daugherty said. “As the second half
progressed, we just tried to do things on both ends of the floor that
are not in our
normal game plan. Overall, the game is one that you just have
to forget and move on.”
Goshen was led by sophomore Willie Frazier’s 14 points on five of
nine shooting. Junior Eric Walsh and freshman Tyler Stotler each tallied
10 points. Walsh finished with a team-high 12 boards.
Goshen will now host nationally-ranked and MCC leader Huntington
College on Tuesday night. That game is to be broadcast on WHME TV 46.
