27 Springer Follows Family Ties To Goshen
Capable
scorer to join older brother in Leafs program in 2004-2005 |
Carlisle,
PA — Third-year head coach Stan Daugherty said that he has tried
to create a basketball family in his short time at the helm of the
Goshen College men’s basketball program. Now, with the addition
of Tyler Springer, he has a true one.
Springer, a 6-2 shooting guard from Cumberland Valley High School in Carlisle,
Pennsylvania, announced Tuesday that he will sign with Goshen College to continue
his academic and basketball-playing careers, joining his older brother Troy on
the team for the 2004-2005 season. “I am very excited to get a commitment from Tyler Springer,” Daugherty
said. “Tyler is an outstanding young man who will be a great addition to
our program. He comes from a tremendous family, and I am pleased that he will
have the opportunity to share one more season with his brother next year.”
Tyler averaged a team-leading
10.1 points per game for the Cumberland Valley Eagles this season, leading his
high school squad to a 19-8 record. He also averaged a team-leading 2.1 assists
per game and knocked in 42.9 percent of his three-point attempts (33 of 77),
all while competing in the Quad A Mid-Penn Conference — one of the toughest
conferences in the largest school class in the state of Pennsylvania. “Tyler will give us depth at the wing spot and provide us with a good shooter
from three-point range,” Daugherty said. “His numbers shooting the
ball were very solid in high school and I look forward to his continued improvement
at the college level. He is a strong kid who can develop into a good defender
for us down the road.”
Even from his shooting guard position, Springer knocked in 51.4 percent of his
two-point tries (55 of 107) and recorded 33 steals over his senior season, eclipsing
scoring highs of 20 points on several occasions. And while senior-to-be, 6-5
Troy will help give the Leafs a stable presence in the low post next season,
Tyler said he hopes to help the team in any way he can. “I am really looking forward to playing for the team next year, and am
also very excited about how the program has been improving over the years,” Tyler
said. “When I visited Goshen during the fall, I had a good feeling about
campus life and the basketball team. I had the chance to meet most of the players
and felt that I would fit in very well. I know the coaching staff has built the
program up and really cares about the players, and that really drew me to GC.
The other thing I look forward about Goshen is the conference they play in, as
it is one of the best in the country. I’m really excited to be a part of
this team.”
Springer said he plans to major in business once at Goshen. And while
the Leafs are coming off the most successful season in school history
on the court — 21-12
overall record, first 20-win season in school history — the team is also
coming off its greatest academic performance: The squad accumulated a team grade
point average of 3.24 during the spring semester, the highest semester GPA of
any team under Daugherty at Goshen. “While we expect to continue to improve as a basketball team, it’s
important to us that we don’t compromise our expectations in the classroom
or in daily life choices,” Daugherty said. “I feel very confident
that the young men we are bringing in will do nothing but continue this standard
of excellence in all areas of their lives.”
Springer joins Huntington North High School senior Sam Ryan and Elkhart
Central
High School senior Brice Hartman in the Leafs’ 2004-2005 recruiting class
to date. Check back to this website for the most up-to-date recruiting information
