Head
Coach Gary Chupp
Gary Chupp begins his first season as head coach of Goshen College in 2007-2008, taking over the program following the departure of six-year and Leafs’ all-time winningest head coach Stan Daugherty, who resigned in May due to personal reasons.
Chupp arrives after a nine-year stint as Bethel College (Kansas) head coach, posting an overall record of 123-136 and a Kansas City Athletic Association mark of 84-74. Chupp becomes Goshen’s 13th head coach in the program’s 53-year history.
“I am very excited to take over the Goshen basketball program," Chupp said. "This position is attractive in part because of the job Coach Daugherty has done the past six seasons. He demonstrated that you can bring in quality student-athletes and have success, both on the court and in the classroom. My hope is to build on what has been accomplished and to take us to the upper level of one of the strongest NAIA conferences in the country.”
In his nine seasons as head coach, Chupp led the Bethel Threshers to KCAC in both 1999 and 2003, and was named KCAC Coach of the Year in both seasons. His 2003 squad made Bethel's first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament, while Chupp coached two KCAC Players of the Year, four NAIA All-Americans and nine NAIA Academic All-Americans during his tenure at Bethel.
Chupp grew up in Goshen and is a 1987 graduate of Bethany Christian High School, where he was a First Team All-Elkhart County High School Basketball Selection.
In 1992, he graduated from Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), Harrisonburg, Va., with bachelor of science degrees in physical education and psychology. While at EMU, he was the second-leading scorer in the history of the men's basketball program and was named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Conference team three straight years. In 1996, he was inducted into the EMU Hall of Honor, and he still holds the conference career record for three-pointers, with 294.
After graduation, Chupp went to Bethel as an assistant coach and interim head coach, from 1992 to 1994, before moving on to Bluffton (Ohio) University as an assistant for two years and then Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa., as an assistant for two years. He then returned to Bethel College in 1998. At Bethel, Chupp also has been an instructor in the health management department.
In addition to his coaching duties, Chupp will serve as an assistant professor of physical education at Goshen. He will reside in Goshen with his wife, Melissa, and their two children: Madilyn, four, and Tyson, one.

Ruben Reyna beings his first season as the head assistant coach at Goshen College in 2007-2008 and his first season in the collegiate coaching ranks.

Reyna and Chupp met on the summer camp circuit, where Reyna was working at the highly-touted McCracken camps in southern Michigan and northern Indiana this summer.
“We are very excited to have Ruben join our coaching staff this year,” Chupp said. “He brings an enthusiasm and passion for the game of basketball that is contagious, and he will have a tremendous impact on our program.”
Reyna arrives following a stellar playing career at Delton Kellogg, where he was voted most improved player following his junior year and earned all-conference honors after his senior season.
A 2007 graduate of Kalamazoo Community College, Reyna was dually enrolled at Western Michigan University.
At Goshen, Reyna will focus primarily on perimeter player development while serving as the program’s video coordinator. He will assist with scouting reports and will be heavily involved in recruiting.

Assistant Coach Gary Carter
Gary Carter begins his first season as an assistant coach at Goshen College in 2007-2008, returning to the college coaching circuit after spending the last three years as a head coach at the high school level. Carter joins first-year head coach Gary Chupp after leading the Elkhart Christian Academy boys’ basketball program since the 2004 season.
“Coach Carter brings a wealth of coaching experience to our staff, having coached at the college level as well as being a head high school coach,” Chupp said. “I will rely a great deal on his knowledge of the game in terms of X's and O's. Being a high school coach in the area, Gary has also developed a good working relationship with the area high school coaches. That will be a huge advantage in the recruiting process.”
Carter last coached collegiate ball at Cedarville University, where he helped guide the perennial NAIA power from 1995-1998. Following that stint, Carter served as a high school assistant coach at both Cedarville High School and George Washington High School (Indianapolis), runs that occupied Carter’s career from 1995 to 2004.
In addition to his work in both high school and collegiate programs, Carter has been a workhorse on the summer camp scene, working camps at Michigan State University, the University of Indianapolis and Cedarville University.
A 1996 graduate of Cedarville University, Carter received his master’s degree from the University of Indianapolis. Carter is a member of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Chupp said that Carter will be heavily involved in recruiting and opponent scouting. He will lead the Leafs’ post play efforts in on-the-court coaching.
