Fall by scores of 7-1, 6-0 against highest level of college ball

(Game 1 Box) (Game 2 Box)
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Preparing for the rest of the rigorous Mid-Central Conference schedule, the Goshen College baseball team took a trip to Fort Wayne to play against NCAA DI Indiana University- Purdue University Fort Wayne on Saturday.

Originally scheduled to be in Spring Arbor, Mich. for a conference double-header, the Maple Leafs were snowed out and decided to make the journey to IPFW to make up an earlier weather cancelled contest.

In game one, starter Shane Kurtz struggled early allowing the first three batters of the ballgame to reach base before Shaun VanDriessche blasted a grand slam to open a 4-0 lead for the Mastodons. Kurtz would settle down to retire the next five he faces and nine of his final eleven.

The Maple Leafs offense would get one back in the second on three straight hits. Tom McDowell doubled and would score after singles by Darren Tronovich and Sean Doering. That was all Goshen was able to muster as they fell 7-1 in the opener.

The nightcap was much of the same story as the Mastodons scored in each of the first three innings to open a 6-0 lead, which they would never relinquish. The Maple Leafs would manage just three hits in game two.

Doering and Tronovich each tallied two hits in the first game, while Cal Schlabach was a perfect 1-for-1 in game two.

The Maple Leafs have a brutal week ahead as they have to make up Saturday's double-header against Spring Arbor on Monday or Wednesday in addition to the home end of the series on Tuesday. The Leafs also host a pair against Indiana University Northwest on Friday, sandwiched in between another pair of conference double-headers versus Huntington University on Thursday and Saturday.
