APR. 4 –– Maple Leafs Improve Non-Conference Record With Sweep

Goshen moves to 9-12 outside MCC with wins over IU-Northwest

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2

GOSHEN, Ind. – Proving just how difficult the Mid-Central Conference is, the Goshen College baseball team improved their non-conference mark to 9-12 with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Indiana University-Northwest on Friday.

The Maple Leafs are still searching for their first MCC victory of the year, but have played well outside the conference. They added to that record on Friday as they won twice in a stretch of ten games in five days forced by postponements of conference games over last weekend.

After a scoreless first two and a half innings, Goshen busted game one wide open with a seven-run third inning. Tom McDowell started the scoring with a two-run single that scored Ian Swartz and Greg Meyer. The Leafs would then take advantage of seven free passes in the inning to take a big 7-0 lead.

On the mound, freshman Josh Yates threw six innings, giving up just three hits and a pair of runs. He struck out seven to earn the win.

In the nightcap, the Maple Leafs scored in each inning as they took a mercy-rule shortened 11-0 decision. Caleb Kitchell got the win, pitching five scoreless innings and striking out six.

Senior right-fielder Ian Swartz led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, while Kraig Miller added two hits, including a double. Sean Doering went 1-for-1 with three RBIs, while Zach Reed and Scott Szucs each had a pair of RBIs for the Maple Leafs.
