Winona Lake, IN — Heading in to Thursday’s
game with the Grace the Goshen College baseball team’s conference
mark stood at .500 with a 4-4 record. The Leafs had already
beaten the Lancers twice in their home opener at the Goshen
College Baseball Complex
on March 18. They knew picking up two more wins were important,
especially facing a divisional opponent. With the addition
of Spring Arbor to the
Mid Central Conference Goshen, Grace, Bethel and Spring Arbor
now make up the north division. The wins improved their overall
record to 7-7,
and their conference record to 6-4.
Goshen took advantage of having the first at-bat in Game One
as they scored two runs to start the game. They were able to benefit from
two Grace errors to jump on top of the Lancers early. The Leafs would
score two more in the fifth and add another in the top of the seventh
collecting 5 runs in all. Besides a lone run from Grace in the seventh,
Goshen was able to shut down the Lancer offense for most of the game.
Sophomore Dann Hunt picked up the win on the mound. Sophomore
Brian Shelton, who collected a double and a homerun while going 2-4 from
the plate, led the Leafs’ offensive charge. Senior Erik Hisner and
freshman Mike Staehle also went 2-4 from the plate.
In Game Two the Leafs would not strike until the fourth inning
when they would again score two runs. Senior Dan Samaritoni added a solo
homerun in the seventh inning giving Goshen a 3-0 lead. Solid defense
allowed them to shut out the Lancer’s offensive attack.
Hisner continued to be a threat at the plate going 2-3 in Game
Two with a double. Shelton collected his second double of the day going
1-3. Junior Dan Fensler was able to get his second win of the year from
the mound.
The Leafs next travel to Huntington on Saturday, April 2 to continue
conference play. Game One is set to begin at 1 p.m.
