Adrian, MI — Timely hitting and a
consistent pitching performance gave Goshen its sixth straight win on
Thursday, as the Leafs (11-7, 8-4) defeated Siena Heights University
by a 9-4 score in Michigan.
Senior Erik Hisner and sophomore Nate Colclasure led the way
at the plate for Goshen, as Hisner finished the afternoon 2-5 with a home
run, a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Colclasure also homered,
knocking in two runs in the process. Together, Hisner and Colclasure combined
to drive in more runs than the Saints’ entire team.
“We drove the ball into gaps today as a team and Erik and Nate
got it working a bit,” said Goshen head coach Jayson Best. “It
was a good win to keep this string going against a non-conference
opponent.”
Siena Heights scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning
on sophomore starter Dann Hunt, but that would be the end of the Saints’ scoring
for quite some time. Hunt began to fatigue in the sixth inning, before
being relived by senior Dan Samaritoni. And while Samaritoni (3-1) did
give up a pair of runs in the seventh, he was credited with the win on
the mound. Sophomore Brian Shelton came on to close the game in the eighth
inning, throwing a pair of scoreless innings to finish things off in style.
Goshen will return to Mid-Central Conference action on Saturday,
looking to continue the program’s longest winning streak in the
past 11 years. The Leafs will host Indiana Wesleyan University for a double-header.
The first pitch to Game One is slated for 1 p.m. at the Goshen College
Baseball Complex.
