GOSHEN, Ind. — Three quick losses in doubles action placed the Goshen College men's tennis team in a hole they could not escape to start a 6-3 loss to Indiana Tech on Tuesday at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.

Following a semifinal defeat in the Crossroads League tournament at the hands of the undefeated champions Indiana Wesleyan University, the GC men took to the court for one final time, but splitting the singles matches without a doubles point led the Maple Leafs to close their season at 7-7. The match was rescheduled from September 20.

Eric Zuercher, Juan Ciudad and Evan Beck capped their 2017 season with individual victories. Zuercher defeated Indiana Tech's top-man Tiago Neves 7-5, 6-3 in the longest-lasting match of the evening. The Baden, Switzerland native finished his junior campaign with six wins after playing atop the Leaf depth chart for all but one regular-season match.

Juan Ciudad took a completely opposite approach than Zuercher, taking care of business early and often in a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the no. 2 slot. The win gave the sophomore an 11-4 overall record with one undecided match coming in the CL tournament against IWU. Ciudad led all Leafs in individual wins on the season as his victory broke a first-place tie with fellow teammate Kartikeya Sharma.

Sophomore Evan Beck, too, cruised to a stress-free advantage at his no. 6 position with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Aritha Weerasinghe and Lukas Kanther fell just short in their respective matches; with darkness falling and the match falling outside of any conference considerations, a 10-point match tiebreaker was implemented instead of a regulation third frame. Weerasinghe's tough-luck loss marked his final round of competition in the fall championship season as the lone senior in the regular GC lineup.

Weerasinghe finished his four-year tenure in Goshen purple with 31 victories in singles competition and 24 wins in doubles; he played 108 matches in the past four seasons with 106 reaching a decision.

Goshen's seven wins this fall are three more than the 2016 team posted in director of tennis Evan Atkinson's maiden voyage. Since the NAIA championship isn't until May, any matches that Goshen plays in the winter or spring will also count on the 2017-18 record.

The loss concluded Goshen's fall schedule with all-conference awards to be announced later this week. For more information on the Maple Leafs throughout the summer, visit GoLeafs.net and follow the team on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

More, including comments from Atkinson, to come when available.
