GOSHEN, Ind. — Sophomore Steven Cranston of the Goshen College men's cross country team has been named the Goshen News Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week of October 2-8.

Cranston finished second among Crossroads League competition and ninth overall on Friday at the Bethel College Invitational, clocking a season-best 26:08.4 on the eight-kilometer (4.97-mile) course at St. Patrick's County Park.

The Canby, Oregon, native posted three of the top 41 times in program history last fall as a freshman; his time Friday came within eight seconds of the top 50 times overall and 12 seconds of the top 10 times by a sophomore.

Goshen finished sixth of 14 teams at the meet, beating out the number-21 team in the NAIA coaches poll (Indiana Tech) and coming within a dozen points of 16th-ranked Madonna. The team has this weekend off before running at the NAIA Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on October 21.

The Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty.
