GOSHEN, Ind. — Sophomore midfielder Ollie Smith of the Goshen College men's soccer team has been named the Goshen News Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week of September 4-10.

Smith, a native of York, England, scored three goals and added five assists as his team went 2-1 last week: he had a pair of assists in a 4-3 loss Monday at Holy Cross before adding two goals and two assists against Rochester on Wednesday. He factored in eight of the team's 10 goals across three matches.

With six assists so far this season, Smith has matched the best mark of any Maple Leaf since 2012 and is more than 40 percent of the way to GC's single-season record of 14. His four goals are one shy of the most on last year's club with 12 matches left in the 2017 campaign.

The Maple Leafs enter September's second week with a 4-2 overall record. Their only match this week is a 7 p.m. kickoff at home Saturday against the University of Saint Francis (Illinois).

The Goshen News Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty.

The award is sponsored by The Goshen News, Goshen's hometown newspaper since 1837. Published daily from Monday through Saturday, the News provides coverage of the Maple Leafs and 10 area high schools in Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaGrange and Noble counties.
