GOSHEN, Ind — Saturday was a tough afternoon on the courts for the Goshen College women's tennis team, which suffered a 9-0 defeat to Marian University at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.

The visiting Knights (3-1, 3-1 CL) came into the match tied for second place in the Crossroads League, and maintained that position in the standings following their decisive victory.

Marian is part of a five-way tie with Spring Arbor, Taylor, Grace and Huntington trailing the undefeated reigning CL champs, Indiana Wesleyan. Bethel College possesses the lone victory of the remaining four teams not included in the second-place conundrum; that win came this past Saturday against Goshen (0-4, 0-4 CL).

Freshman and Goshen High School product Elsie Koop Liechty was the only Leaf to crack the scoring column with a game in the second set of her 6-0, 6-1 loss to Marian's Mary Mullaney at no. 3 singles.

Goshen director of tennis Evan Atkinson looked to shake things up as Koop Liechty and Megan Ewing became the duo atop the doubles lineup. The switch failed to bear fruit as the two were defeated 8-0, while Mezrae Watt and Kyra Krall met the same fate at no. 2.

The Goshen women will look to break out of its eighth-place tie with the University of Saint Francis and Mount Vernon Nazarene University when it goes toe-to-toe with USF on Tuesday. The first serve is set for 4 p.m. at Swinney Park in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
