GULF SHORES, Ala. — Goshen College senior Isaiah Friesen closed his collegiate track and field career with a 15th-place finish in the men's marathon Saturday at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship.

The Filley, Nebraska, native, entered the 26.22-mile event as the 65th seed in the field of 77 runners; running his first career marathon, he finished in two hours, 53 minutes, 39.5 seconds, making him one of 21 finishers to break the three-hour mark.

Goshen's other entrant, senior Ryan Smith, challenged for the lead early before dropping out of the field approximately three-quarters of the way through the event. He was joined by one runner who did not start and 31 more who started but did not finish.

Friesen was one of two athletes from Crossroads League schools to finish the race: Taylor's Aaron Scott finished 28th in 3:04:31.1, while six CL runners from five schools did not finish.

Christian Graham, a senior from the University of Saint Mary in Kansas, won the race in 2:37:31.2, more than three minutes clear of the field. The final All-American spot went to Corban's Zachary Steele, whose eighth-place finish was the last to affect team scoring, in 2:45:08.8.

While Goshen's men finished the national meet with a pair of top-15 finishes, neither GC athlete scored team points by finishing in the top eight: the Maple Leafs finished in a de facto tie for 70th out of 121 in the team standings.

The national meet concludes Goshen's regular-season schedule: the 2017-18 season is slated to begin with women's volleyball on Wednesday, August 16, with the track and field season beginning several months later.
